WTF is wrong here?

Started welding some stainless yesterday. I can run 7018 uphill all day. I had good results with welding 1/8" 309L-16 rods on 12" sched 40 304 with 309 tabs when I started yesterday. Approx 90 amps, AC. Had to stop and reset machine to burn some 7018 for an emergency repair. Welds looked like this before reset...After reset, they globbed up in the middle with no fill on the sides. Tried going up and down on amperage, cleaned area for ground to bright metal, tried stringer and weave. No improvement. WTF am I doing wrong?Sent from my iPhone using TapatalkUsing Tapatalk

Reply:-15 is for all positions-16 is for all positions except downhill-17 is for flat and horizontalAs duaneb55 has already said, DCEP is the preferred current.

Reply:NashvegasWelder....not really understanding your pictures.  My browser shows the first as a downhill...is this pic an upside down view of three passes uphill?  Any chance 3/32" rod was used for this?  The second pic is an attempt at uphill with 1/8"....big difference.  That's going to be a tougher then normal uphill ss weld due to the fact that the lug is narrowing out as you pass center.  I would go with two passes (stringer and weave) uphill 3/32" rod.  Lot less aggravating.

Reply:good ol' stainless stick. I can't count the number of times I've seen my older brother throw a test coupon to the ground and stalk off.
Reply:I dont know about states, but this part of the world stainless stick welding is used much in paperfactories.They like it becouse it is a cheaper and faster way to make welds compared to tig welding.Most of stainless in here is welded with stick. And nash can you turn that pipe while you weld? If you can I would recomment you try to go slightly downhill, it comes out much nicerlooking weld.

Reply:I didn't do much pipe welding on anything over 2" handrail before I started my job here. Primarily flat and structural, so this has been a true learning experience. This stainless has thoroughly whipped my butt, but I've come back swingin!Sent from my iPhone using TapatalkUsing Tapatalk
