this'll take a couple of posts to get it all. It’s my middle son’s 20th birthday and he wanted a “military” style gun locker.  He sent me some photo’s he found on the web and I whipped up a design in Solidworks.1x3 16ga rectangular tube for the main frame and door frames, 16ga sheet metal back, top, bottom and shelves, ¾” flattened expanded metal sides, front and partition, 1x1x1/8 angle iron frames for the shelves and partition frames.Pic 1…Tacked the 1x3 together and gang-cut the frame parts. Pic 2…Jigged up the one frame side and welded it out.  Millermatic 211 w/ .030 wire and very low setting.  Miters weren’t exactly 45 deg so I had some gaps to fill and burned thru several times.  Ended up using a series of tacks sort of like patch panels on a ccar.  I need practice with thin metal and more patience setting up my saw. Pic 3 & 4…Jigged up the second side on top of the first and welded it out. Reply:Pic 5…Temporary bracing to hold the cross pieces square then tack the second side up….check for square…weld out. Pic 6…Trial fit…gaps are nice and uniform…so far so good. Pic 7…Expanded metal tacked to inside of sides and doors.  I really hate that stuff.  Lots of sharp jagged barbs everywhere.  Hinges and handles installed.  Made the handles out of 3/4” pipe and ¼” standoffs.  Tigged the caps and then turned them down on the lathe.  Came out nice. Reply:Pic 8…Jigged up the frames for the shelves and partition.  1x1x1/8 angle iron. Pic 9…This time I paid attention to the fit-up.  Practically no gaps. Reply:Pic 11 & 12…Cleaned, prepped and painted using PPG Shopline epoxy primer and JAU single stage urethane.  Color is mid-40’s military jeep olive drab…at least that’s what the paint store guy said.  Looks like army green to me anyway.  Shelves and partition are flat black. Thanks for looking. Reply:It's a beautiful job, no question.  But is it really secure enough for a gun cabinet?  Not only can you see what's inside it, but you can get through the expanded metal in almost no time.Tim
Reply:Great job! Is it big enough? You may have to build another one. LOLA man needs to know his limitations!

Reply:I love it. The design is simple and industrial, not like some sissy wood crap. Great work.
Reply:Thanks for all your replies.  Here's a pic with all his stuff installed.  I still need to make some "rests" or brackets or whatever you call those things that hold the butts and muzzles.  Any ideas? Reply:Great looking design.how many weapons will fit?  I hope your son in a soldier...i would hate to see someone question the 203 attachment...
Reply:I'm guessing it will hold at least 8 rifles. My son's in the Nat. Guard.  Transfered from the Texas State Guard a few months ago.  Off to Ft. Benning this summer.Re the 203, it's not really a 40mm M203.  It's a 37mm M???.  I don't believe there are any antipersonnel ammo available for it....just smoke, chalk, flares and maybe rubber balls.  And they are really expensive.  I'm no authority on this so I could be mistaken....except for the price of the ammo.Miller 211 w/ spool gunMiller Dynasty 200DXLongevity 60i IGBT plasmaO/A w/ crappy chinese torch/gaugesSouth Bend 10K latheGrizzly 4029 10x54 millGrizzly 7x12 hor bandsawangle grnders, bench grnder, bench belt sndr7.5 hp 80gal cmprsorFeel like stealing this one.  Nice idea.  Looks like a police station gun cabinet.  I need to make one to keep the kid from getting into the guns later on.
Reply:For the rifle and long gun brackets. Why not just a simple spring clamp tool holder kinda like this.Nice job, and from a retired Guardsman, thank your son for serving. If you cant fix it with a hammer, it must be an electrical problem."Boy, everyone starts with a full bag of luck and an empty bag of experience. The trick is to fill the bag of experience before the bag of luck is empty."-Grandad circa 1990ish

Reply:Yeah the 37mm is for cavilian use they do that so you can't put military HE  rounds in it just less than leathal rounds ....however the m203 will fire cavilian 37mm rounds and for the butt rests take some 2x4 tubing cut it about 3 inches long and then cut those pieces on a 45 on the four inch face giving you 2 butstock rests they sell a spring steel barel clamp that you can bolt up I will see if I can find a link I built several for our arms room in Iraq ....they didn't look as nice as that though
