What welding rods run well and don't run well on inverter based stick welders?
Reply:I have lots of use on miller XMTs and Lincoln Invertec. Never seen a rod those machines won't burn well.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720
Reply:With my inverters, I'm not even going to mention my Dynasty 300, because it plain sucks with SMAW!My Everlast PowerArc 200 really likes ESAB's 10P-Plus 6010, and AtomArc 7018. My V350-Pro likes 10P-plus, AtomArc, and Lincoln's 5P-plus. Funny to me, my SA-200s could care less what brand of rod I use! Reply:"Inverters" covers a lot of ground. You can't really compare a small HF inverter to a top of the line unit. Typically you get what you pay for with these.Small cheap inverters have a reputation of not running 6010 well. Better or maybe "more advanced" is a better way to word it, inverters have no trouble with 6010. Some guys have reported their units run 6010 ok while others say their same model won't. It has a lot to do with how you tend to run the rod as well as the unit.Your TA 95S has a reputation for not running 6010 well. On the other hand, my Maxstar 200 is designed specifically to run 6010, even on 110v power..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:my miller max star 150 110v inverter stick machine hates 6010 but works well with other steel and stainless rods. something to do with the machine software and whip and pause technique.i.u.o.e. # 15queens, ny and sunny fla

Reply:I dug this up awhile back on Millers site having to do with the Maxstar 150. ( Special thanks to Shortfuse who remined me where I posted this here in the past)by Miller Brad,The reason that 6010 does not work really well with that machine is that the valid arc condition needed for stick welding needs to be within a certain voltage range, which is specific to the hardware/software of the machine. We basically created this machine with intentions of being a great TIG machine and a good stick machine. Certain changes to hardware/software that might make this machine run 6010 better, effect the TIG arc too much, which was not something that we were willing to sacrifice. This is why when the arc length on a 6010 electrode changes to a longer arc length you are having outages. The voltage that this electrode burns at is higher (outside of this "valid arc" range) than some other electrodes, and the machine itself does not have the capability of producing the inductance necessary to effectively burn a 6010 electrode like some of the bigger machines do. All of the machines that I know of that fit within this size range have issues with this same thing. 6010 is kind of a worst case scenario for a welding machine, and is not typically something that we recommend for use with this machine. Not because it will hurt the machine, cause it will not. Just cause it does not work really well due to outages. 1/8" diameter 6011 will not have this same problem and will run flawless.
Reply:I have used a couple inverters, only one had problems with a type of electrode. My Maxstar 150stl doesn't like some 6010.. 1/8" red 6010 it will run fine if I don't whip too far and don't push the electrode too close to the puddle. 3/32" red 6010 won't stay lit for more than a few seconds.. Same brand 6010, guess it just has to do with the OCV at the amperage used.Airco Ac/Dc 300 HeliwelderMillerMatic 200 (stolen)Miller Maxstar 150STLMiller AEAD200LE (welding and generating power) Hobart MIG
Reply:I have an everlast 140st that is an igbt inverter and it runs 6011, 6013, 7014, and 7018 all really well.  I do not have any 6010 to try.  I've heard that a lot of inverters don't run 6010 well so I've never purchased any.  Considering it runs 6011 well I don't see any reason to.

Reply:I'll throw a wrinkle in - tried scratch start tig with my maxstar 150s (stick only machine).Lights fine, shuts off the arc in about a second. Will not stay lit.Clipped on the stinger from a $100 crappy Century 90 amp inverter - tig welds really nice - better than it stick welds.Ran it wide open on steel, four welds about 5" long. Did not trip the breaker nor turn on the temp light.Ambient temp in shop, 55 deg F.Dave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.

Reply:We have the MILLER 200's, CST 280's, and some 304's and run 6010 and 7018 great. The CST 280 seems to be the first machines asked for even though they are not digital readout.

Reply:The nuke plants i work in have miller maxstar200s and CST 280s.  I do NOT like 280s they seem to be way harder to light when your hanging from your toes up in the steel. Ill take an older maxstar anyday of the week, all we burn is 7018 but it burns it well.  I have an AHP Alphatig 200dx and it does NOT like Hobart 7018 rod.  weld quality is ok, but it sounds like someone is pissing on a hot exhaust pipe. It does like the old 6013 that I have, and is seems to like the lincoln 7018ac (from my old buzzbox) when on the ac setting.

Reply:ESAB MiniArc 161LTS inverter will run all rods, including 6010's just fine. It's a dual voltage DC stick/TIG inverter.  Max amps with stick on 115VAC is 110 amps, max with stick on 230VAC is 160 amps.  Can be bought as a stick only unit or a stick/TIG unit.  Mine is stick only.

Reply:I've been running Lincoln 6010, 7018, and they have been like butter. (as in good!)The 280dx complained for a moment when I had the leads coiled, so I uncoiled them and it quit complaining and has run great. I cranked it up for some 5/32nd 7018 and 6010, it all burned better than on my older Hobart I used to have. I ran some ESAB 7018 and it was great as well. Can't complain.Regards,RobGreat Basin WeldingInstagramBlue weldersRed weldersMy luscious Table DIY TIG Torch cooler
