i was able to pick up two victor torch heads gentleman hooked them to his torch so I could check for leaks no leaks didn't think to light them ( I know its a torch that's how it works) but I didn't. anyway is there anything I should look into specifically when purchasing regulators and bottles. I figured as far as bottles ill get the average sized bottles but more importantly should I be looking into a certain pressure, flow , any other characteristic that will make them operate as they should when I go to purchase regulators? im still looking for numbers on the heads so I don't have much info yet but im sure ill be back with something soon id like to get regs and bottles tomorrow though so I can get to using these things if possible.Last edited by strtspdlx; 04-13-2014 at 08:19 PM.
Reply:Two nice cutting torches. Also totally useable for general heating tasks. The top torch is dedicated for cutting, the bottom one you can get welding tips and rosebuds for as well. Get the biggest tanks you can afford/store/handle. I found a local shop that would swap owned bottles and bought a pair on craigslist, then swapped them for new full bottles. Paid a $20 hydro test fee on the o2 bottle because it was out of date, but it was still less than 1/3 the cost of buying new bottles. Acetylene output is limited by tank size, so bigger tanks can use bigger torch tips. Cutting or welding anything but sheet metal needs large tanks. Gas is also way cheaper in bigger tanks. Buying used regs is a bit of a crapshoot, I feel it's safer to either buy new or buy used and have them rebuilt. I got great deals on used regs and had them rebuilt by http://www.regulatortorchrepair.com/. About 1/2 price of new. Check out http://www.concoa.com/docs/ADIS/ADI1275Q.pdf for a good short handbook of O/A torch safety and instructions. http://www.knucklebusterinc.com/down...ing_Manual.pdf is a copy of the old standard for O/A welding, which is old but still very much relevant. If you're not welding, you can get propane cutting and heating tips. Propane is WAY cheaper and easier to deal with than acetylene and works fine for cutting/heating. You need grade T hose for propane, but you can use the acetylene reg. You'll need hoses, regulators, gas tanks, and I'd also recommend flashback arrestors. Also eye protection #5 green goggles/glasses for gas, and gloves. A full face shield is also a very smart idea.  If you have one, go down to your local welding shop. Avoid the big chains if you have a choice (airgas, praxair) as the independant guys are often better, both in prices and knowledge.

Reply:ive been piecing together a torch setup for awhile now i have a half broke cart that needs an axle and wheels/tires and were im at is all extremely soft mucky dirt/sand so itll get some ''offroad'' tires and i need hose aside from that i have all safety equipment as work aside from shaded lenses. i mostly use my sunglasses which i know isn't a good idea but i cant get work to buy me the safety lenses to use the torch and im young and whatnot so....but thanks for the info guys ill put it to good use just wasn't sure if i had to be certain of any specific things before i went and bought regulators.
Reply:Nice torches and rebuild kits are still available.  They should last you decades.What did ya give for the pair?For cutting, get a face shield. MUCH more comfortable than goggles.
Reply:You only ever get one set of eyes, and they don't heal. Glasses are $10. They also make it WAY easier to see what your flame/puddle is doing. Protect yourself and be a better metal worker. It's not worth doing if you can't do it safely. Hell, I'll send you some glasses if you PM me your address, if you promise to use em. You'll want the face shield soon enough on your own after a few big pops, but the glasses will prevent achey eyes and damage that haunts you years down the line.
