Anyone on the board be willing to give me a call and talk engine driven Lincolns with me, I might buy a used one but need to know what I am looking at, I am looking at going with a used machine because right now the welder I have is a Ranger GXT 250, its kind of small, and it is a gas burner, and I have concerns that I might not be able to get jobs with it. I am looking around and finding descent looking machines in the 3500-5000.00 range, but don't know exactly what I am looking at. Some help here would be very appreciated.72 Chevy Cummins Project94 3500HD Welding Rig build Sold NOV 2011
Reply:what kind of jobs are you trying to get?  I would think a 250 would work for most 1 man show stuff.   unless u get into big structural stuff  that needs lots of amps.   Diesel will be much more fuel efficient...   New or used machine???Tiger Sales:  AHP Distributor    www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P,  Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma.  For Sale:  Cobra Mig 250 w/ Push-pull gun.  Lincoln Wirematic 250

Reply:Being in Texas makes it a bit harder, around here think the old sa-200's and 250's are gold.  Any used diesel welder will cost double here vs up north.  That being said - you can get a NEW 305 for under 4k - LPG for 5k, diesel puts you upwards of 7k  for a new mahine with warranty.  For general fab work, on site repairs etc. the 305 is a decent machine (still like the sa-250 better) and it has enough AC power to run anything you plug into it.  The old SA's put out 120v DC - not so good for a lot of newer tools.Keep an eye on your local Craigslist - as well as DFW's if you don't mind the drive, seems like a lot more welders pop up there than anywhere else in the state.  If you do decide you want to look at the older mahines - SA's - shoot me a PM, I can put you in touch with a couple that are only a few hour away. When any government, or any church for that matter, undertakes to say to its subjects, "This you may not read, this you must not see, this you are forbidden to know," the end result is tyranny and oppression, no matter how holy the motives.

Reply:some companies have very specific requirements or no work..i know some pipeline companies are like that..
Reply:I have an SA-250 and an SA-200 they are tanks, cannot be killed like the old 300 Ford and 292 Chevy six cylinders. But my Trailblazer weighs half as much, uses less fuel, and runs a suitcase, and AC TIG. On the other hand if I have a piping job(trailblacer can not touch the beautiful arc of the generator machines), or lots of stick work, the Lincoln's shine.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."

Reply:I hope you know you got taken! That REALLY gets me mad when people take advantage of others. 1985 was the year Lincoln had bad discobubulator capacitors. I have one spare one left, so I'll give ya $2000.00 and you can go find a better welder.Alright, I tried. Very nice machine. Was it repainted? From that pic, it doesn't look like it to me. What did ya give for it? That will look great on you new rig!!! Congrats!!!"Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! I sent him over to snag that MIC-4 while tbone wasn't looking!" - duaneb55"I have bought a few of Tbone's things unlike Stick-Man who helps himself" - TozziWelding"Stick-man"

Reply:Mr Beast.Buying a machine because of the color is a little outdated thinking...  All purchases should be made on the basis of application.  What do you want to do with it now?  What will you want to do with it in the future?  Buying new vs, used can lead to lost time, and on some jobs potentially fired!  Technology in the welding industry continues to evolve, and we as a country need to do a better job keeping up with it.  Our competitor's (other countries) do a much better job of applying new technolgy and we need to learn how to keep up!
