I bought a Baldor 3/4 HP grinder so hopefully I won't ever need to buy another. It is bigger than I expected, but I think it will do anything I ever need to do.  It came with exhaust ports for use with a vacuum collection system.  I don't think I will ever need that option, but will probably just use a shop vac to periodically clean out what has collected. A pic may help, but I wanted some kind of simple way to cover or block off those ports so the debris won't be thrown onto the wall and floor.  The ports are an oval shape about three inches wide and and inch and a half tall. Any ideas or suggestions are much appreciated.
Reply:Someone where I work took large ziploc bags and tie-wrapped them to the ports on ours. I didn't think it was a good idea when I first saw it. I figured the bags would melt. Thet haven't yet, and it keeps the junk off the floor, but we don't use them a lot for heavy grinding...
Reply:You can buy filter bags that go on them like the exhausts on a sand/abrasive blaster.A man needs to know his limitations!
Reply:What size are the ports?  2"?  Find a can (pop, Coors Light, V8, are all different diameters) that fits and hose clamp it.  You can paint it to suit your taste.
Reply:Thanks for the ideas, I will be searching.  The ports are oval. About 3- 3-1/2" wide and about 1" tall, not round. I was going to take a sheet of aluminum or steel and tack on some orthodontic ball clasps to pop it on, but that would not give a real seal.   Thanks for the replies!
Reply:I'd clamp on metal tube (cut piece of conduit, can with top and bottom cut off, etc), and stuff the back with a metal pot scrubber (or steel wool, but steel wool can burn).  The more airflow you allow out through those ports, the less crap you get thrown back at you out the front, and the pot scrubber would stop the crud from getting through to the wall (kind of like a vacuum filter).
Reply:We tied fabric screw bags over ours. They breathe, they are cheap, and they work well.
Reply:I appreciate the ideas and suggestions.  I ended up making the modification with THIS
Reply:After using my grinder/wire wheel the other day to take some rust and old paint of a small part and getting that stuff in my throat and nose I was thinking of the opposite. I would like to make my ports functional to evac the crap coming off the parts I am grinding or wire wheeling.I am pretty sure the air just flows out the ports right? I would like to plumb the ports to the outside of the building or at least a catch can of some sort. My one grinder has fabric bags hanging off the ports and that seems to work alright but this grinder is on the bench and there is no room for the bag type to hang off the ports. Anyone have a collection system they would like to share? I need ideas.
