What type of Steel for plow Blades

I'm trying to figure out the best type of steel to buy to make 1/2" thick snow plow blades.  In sure it's some type of AR, but I don't know what would be best.  Gonna be cut with plasma.  Not sure if that will do anything to the steels temper. Reply:What kind of plow are you building Al?On standard truck style plows, I use 1/8" or 12 ga mild steel. The bottom cutting edge is generally some kind of abrasion resistant steel IIRC. I don't think even commercial mold boards get over 3/16-1/4" in thickness. Reply:Plow BLADE or Cutting edge?2 completely different things...The cutting edge for Fisher plows are 1/2" thick steel..Nothing exotic at all.And they DO NOT come on the plow stock..these are added after.And if you replace the cutting edge you should drive the truck with the plow down backwards to "set the edge"..If you dont then it will just hop off the ground until it gets the angle worn in..I work for a Fisher dealer on the side so anything you need just ask....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.

Reply:Commercial work, you'll want an AR steel cutting edge. Plowing one acre parking lot or less I'd use a mild steel 5/8" thick cutting edge, If wear is a major concern, consider adding a piece of grouser stock to the lower edge. I do this after a no longer new cutting edge gets excessive wear on the corners. even a 6" piece of this high manganese steel that work hardens will make your blade last forever. Highway plows control wear to the cutting edge with shoes armored with carbide in a steel matrix. The edge won't wear faster than the shoe.The moldboard need not be anything very wear resistant, many of the new $60,000 one tons are being fitted with stainless moldboards.An optimist is usually wrong, and when the unexpected happens is unprepared.
