I'm very much an amateur but generally get along alright, slowly getting better.Today I had a hassle where I blew a hole through and three attempts later it still wasn't fixed. My technique for this job obviously isn't too good. What I do is this:Using a 130A stick welder. Set at the high end of the range.I've got something like better than 1/16" metal onto heavier angle iron.It is welded on with a lap join and I go over the weld again to make a higher bead. That's all I want. A higher bead of metal.Only I go a little too far, to the end of the weld, and I burn through. So I reduce the amperage and I point the stick in at the bead side of the hole and put down more metal. And finishing up I sort of do the sides and then a sort of quick pass at the bottom.Know what I mean? Like the hole is round, of course. One side is the 'bead' side where I was laying the bead. And then there's the two sides touching it and then the bottom. It closes up but it has a crater in it.So I try to chip out the crater and you can't do that with my blunt chipping hammer/pick to I try to get the slag out with a metal scriber. Then I do the whole thing again trying to close the crater.Get the same result.Do the same thing, chip, scrape, hook out, weld again. It is still not good.I'll be grinding it all out tomorrow and having another go.Just crossed my mind tonight that perhaps I should be asking the guys who know....What am I doing wrong? What's the right way to handle this kind of thing?
Reply:Havent done it in some time. But what I have done, is knock the flux off a rod, and use it like oxygen & acetylene / Tig welding filler rod.Dont pay any attention to meIm just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:Yep. I think that might be the clue. Put some filler in there.
Reply:If at all possible, sometimes placing a copper plate on the backside of a hole helps to fill the hole.Dont pay any attention to meIm just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:I do have a copper plate, too. Must remember to use it. Wouldn't have helped this time though. Job on the top of square frame of angle iron only maybe 5" square. But yes, good idea. I must stop being so slack... set things up properly...
Reply:Mig, and Tig are the easiest processes to use to fill a hole. No slag to get in the way.Dont pay any attention to meIm just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:I second what cep says I do alot of thin rusty stick welding and everytime I stick a rod and it gets too hot I knock all the flux off with my hammer and it becomes a filler rod.
Reply:I use a brass hammer on the back side of the hole. To keep the filler from falling out. Also I would try and use a 3/32 rod to keep heat down like a 6011.Sent from my C811 4G using TapatalkVantage 300 kubota ,miller 304 xmt ,lincoln ln 25 pro , ranger 305 G, plenty of other tools of the trade to make the sparks fly. |
