Yesterday I was bored, so I tested if I could still weld stainless pipe, so I welded 5g, 2g and 6g pipes. Here is pictures how it went,These first two are welded in vertical position (2g)and these second two are welded in horizontal fixed position (5g)Attachment 613801 Attached Images
Reply:and for last there is a 6g pipe. [ATTACH=CONFIG]613811[/ATTACH Attached ImagesLast edited by Svetsare; 02-08-2014 at 12:34 PM.
Reply:I welded that 2G pipe with 2.5mm electrodes (3/32)and those 5G and 6G with 2mm electrodes. Electrodes where Esab Ok 63.20 (E316L-16)Material thickness is 2 millimetres, and pipe is 80mm wide.
Reply:Stick welding 2 mm. stainless in 5g and 6g position.  I'm impressed.  I've never run across any 2mm stainless rods.  A quick search and found they go right down to 1.6mm.   Thanks for the info.
Reply:Yes there is a 1.6mm rods, the smallest one I have seen is 1.5mm rod. I  think it was made by avesta. Old guys around here say, that they welded test´s for 1.6mm pipe with stick and man was it difficult with 1.6 rod, but when I gotted those 1.5 rods, it became weldable, never tested it though, becouse you dont need a test for so thin pipefor stick today.. 2mm test is common here around pipe welders and a lots of it stainless pipe is welded with stick, (at paperfactorys etc.) they say that most of stainless stuff is being welded with stick around here.I think why its used so much, is the thing it being a lot cheaper, then tig.And for  me stainless pipe is much more fun to weld with stick.
Reply:Tig and stainless go together so beautifully though.Good work, regardless.
Reply:Yes it goes, and very easy to weld also, when there is no problems with gas.. Thats the only weakness I find with tig, gas. Is specially when you have long stainless steel lines to put a place bead with tig. Many times there is some problems with gasses. With stick you dont have to worry about that, just go and weld.
Reply:This is last position 1g welded with 2.5mm sticks. Much more penetration on root, but surface is much more flat.I welded this one downhill.
Reply:If someone is interested here is youtube clip on welding that 1g pipe.

Reply:Looks Awesome!!
Reply:I'm not getting it.  No disrespect meant here.  Arc length, whip and pause, and travel speed look all over the place to me.  BUT the beads and slag are awesome.  What am I missing?TA Arcmaster 300CM3XMT 304S22P12 suitcase feederX-Treme 12VSOptima pulserTA161SMaxstar 150STLHypertherm PM45OP setupStihl 020AVP, 039, 066 Magnum
Reply:Haha  Yes it looks, but you have to do some tricks when you are welding this thickess, some times it starts to blow thru so you have to go backwards, you harve to turn pipe so you can go a little bit more downhill.. and sometimes cap gets so small, you have to put little bit more amperage and kind of jump with your rod. Very hard for me toexplain couse I aint native english speaker..But as they say around here. Welding is in your eye, not in your hand ; )
Reply:6G stainless stick video here, if someone is interested.
