As I understand it the 7018 rod does not provide shielding gas the instant an arc is stuck giving you porosity. I was told that long arcing is a way around this.Any truth in this???
Reply:Well,A lot of times I start a rod ahead of where I want to start, than long arc to back to where I want to start.I need to make a vid in it....Just a couple welders, big hammers, grinders, and torches.Work will free you.Men in dirty jeans built this country, while men in clean suits have destroyed it. Reply:I do what AK said but it usually winds up being like Squirmy said because I'm still a little clumsy with a long electrode. Still works...GravelThe difference between theory and practice is that in theory there is no difference.

Reply:You can start your bead where you strike your arc, you just need to pause for a second to allow the puddle to form which gives you time for the slag/shielding to develop.Striking ahead and moving back works as well.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720

Reply:if the flux is intact and the rod's kept hot i just give it a second after striking the arc and go.i.u.o.e. # 15queens, ny and sunny fla
Reply:And don't 'long arc' a 7018.  It's a 'drag' type of rod.  Long-arcing it will really mess things up.From Lincoln's SMAW Guide:Drag the electrode lightly. Since low hydrogen electrodes rely onthe molten slag for shielding, never hold a long arc, whip, leavethe crater, or move rapidly in any direction. Failure to followthese techniques may result in porosity and/or reduce mechanicalproperties.
Reply:Can't see intentionally long arcing 7018 but it's done in varying degrees with 6010/6011 to preheat material.
