AC/DC 225 humming sound when DC welding

I have just bought an AC/DC 225 "tombstone" welder. With AC I hear only the arc, but when i switch to DC (+ or -), there's a strong, humming sound coming from the welder itself while welding. Is this normal or something to worry about? As you might have guessed, I am new to DC welding.

Reply:how bad is the hum? Does it still weld ok? Have you removed the sides to clean it or check for bad connections?
Reply:The dc side has a stabilizer, the wooden shunts are probably loose just whack them in a little tighter. They separate the metal laminations from the actual copper coil.
Reply:Every coil type welder I have ever used ac or dc has a pretty strong hum when you have an arc going. I wouldn't worry about it.The difference between art and craft is the quality of the workmanship. I am an artist.
Reply:If you notice the arc of AC is a good bit harsher than the arc of DC current.  I have noticed at times that the "noisy" arc of AC I didn't pickup on machine noises I did when using the softer DC.  I know the old Lincoln buzzbox i had hummed, grunted, growled, and even snorted and wheezed a time or two, but I never did manage to kill it.  If it's welding fine then it wouldn't concern me.I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:I took the machine to the shop where I bought it, and they told me the same: don't worry about it, those things always hum a bit. As long as it's welding fine (what it does), there's no problem. I guess I'm just a bit too nervous when it comes to new toys....Thanks for all the answers, your help is appreciated!
