I have some experience with MIG welding a long time ago and I am going to school to train in welding. I was considering pursuing MIG since I would love to want to get back into the automotive sector, I enjoyed fabricating for Jeeps many years ago. However it seems to be more of a demand and better pay for those who do Stick. I have a family to take care of so would it be a better option to go Stick first then work on MIG/TIG? Stick and MIG take about the same time to complete at the school and the cost is around the same as well. If I had the time I would just have gone TIG, but time constraints are not allowing it atm.

Reply:Stick is a more difficult process to learn and master and also more well paying jobs if you are good at it. Reply:Oxygen & acetylene welding is the best to start out on. It will teach you puddle control. Reply:Based on what you're saying what you plan on doing with it I would go for a Millermatic 212 with .030 ER70S-6 wire and a bottle of 75/25 argon co2 mix gas.

Reply:Stick really teaches you the 4 basic fundamentals well...amperage setting, arc length, angle of electrode, and travel speed. If any of these are not set / performed reasonably accurately, the bead will reflect it. Stick is a very basic process that will serve a weldor well over the years because it can get into tight places, and doesn't require a shielding gas.As with any welding process, you have to practice your butt off.Rich
Reply:The stick class is 5.6 months 3400$ 24hrs a week, used to be 40hrs a week, $3k and only 3 1/2 months, but our college district has gone through a lot of changes, many for the worse. 385 out of the 542 hours is just welding, the rest is split between OSHA training, computer training (Already have lots of those done), Oxy-fuel cutting and a few other things squeezed in.
