hi all, wondering whether MIG welding is surficient to handle most aluminium and stainless steel welding. i am trying to avoid TIG welding cause it requires alot more skill than the others. wouldnt want to go through a training session whenever i get a new guy in the shop
Reply:Depends greatly on what you are going to be doing. Mig welding doesn't give you that stack of dimes look many want/need for alum and stainless. Also mig has some limits as far as thin materials.Alum mig would be fine for welding up alum truck bodies but wouldn't cut it for alum boat rails and so on for example.Keep in mind alum and stainless tig isn't something you are just going to take a new guy and train him up in a few hours, or even days if he's never tig welded before. Even those with basic steel tig experience are going to need a fair amount of training on average to get good results. You are going to be hiring tig welders not knuckle draggers. Pay good employees decent wages and treat them with respect and they tend to stay. Try and hire minimum wage smucks and treat them as disposable and you'll constantly be needing new help..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:the thinnest i alum mig weld at work is .160 sheet anything thinner than that id recommend tig, alum mig is great for thicker material and is very fast heres a pic on 3/8 . now for stainless mig i think is just ugly compared to tig. if your going to be doing alot of small parts, tubing. or items that require very pretty defined welds tig is the way to go.

Reply:It's very easy with great results if you have modern pulse mig. But with hoby or small migs it's a no-go. I'm welding with cebora 350amp pulse mig that goes as low as 10amps (synergetic machine) on alu and can do 1mm alu with no problem. Tig machines are cheap these days and you can do alot of things with them. If you have big production runs than modern pulse mig is the way to go. If you have small production runs go with tig. An example: We were welding aprox. 10m long aluminium fences-tig proces aprox 10 hours, with pulse mig aprox. 4 hours. You can get stack of dimes look with double pulse function, but i prefer smooth welds. For thin stainless you also need pulse mig, because with normal mig proces you'll get alot of splatter.

Reply:so i guess the answer is NO. i will be working 3mm aluminium, my mild steel is 0.8mm to 12mm. i dont have any prospects for stainless yet. i am doing a major shop upgrade and planning to bring in a hobart ironman 230 mig welder. advise is welcome before i make the purchase. Thanx
Reply:As mentioned it depends on the application....I'm kinda confused with your statement about your guy isn't that good with TIG to where you want to buy one for your new shop? Its not that easy to MIG Stainless or aluminum cosmetically pleasing to the eye so if your NOT planning on just welding toilet seat hinges in a bail shop I would reconsider your guy as you refer to them as.....Just my opinion as a shop owner..
