Looking for anyone here that may have already had some experience with the new TIG gas cups from CK? These gray cups are supposed to be able to take higher heat in a gas lens cup and not crack at the shoulders as bad as the older 'pinkies'?I haven't bought any, but wondered is they're worth a look?Note: I don't have any problems with the straight collet, non-lens cups (in pink ceramic) but wondered if these were more durable in the gas lens necked down to say a 6 or 8 opening? Those are the cups I have to buy regularly, seems the uneven cooling at the shoulder from the lens diameter to the gas opening is where they always crack???Why spend to learn if someone's already used them?Cheers,Kevin MorinKenai, Ak
Reply:They aren't new and they are supposed to hold up a higher heat temp. If you are cracking your cups try then out. I have never cracked a cup from welding though so I will never need one.Torchmate 2x2 CNC with Flashcut CNC controlsHypertherm Powermax45 Esab ET220i Razorweld 195 MigRazorweld 200ac/dc TigTormach 770, Tormach xstechRazorweld, Vipercut/Vipermig, SSC Foot Pedal Dealer
Reply:Aren't those lava.  They take higher heat, but are more easily damaged.
Reply:gamble, I've only just heard about them in a 'new products' announcement so I thought that's what they were- new?  My gas lens cups at 300A give up in the #6-8 size right at the shoulder of the cup's concentric reducer in about 3-4 hours;  welding along then the cup's  opening nozzle just drops off and contaminates the weld and allows air to the tungsten. Pain in the stern.I guess I'll ask the LWS to bring some in to see how they last, I figured someone on the WWeb Forum would have used them before?rlitman, you're saying they take more heat but are easier to crack if bumped?  meaning they're more brittle? kind of a tradeoff?Cheers,Kevin MorinKenai, AK
Reply:Unfortunately, I don't think any of the "stone" style cups will last. They inevitably get dropped and/or are affected by too much heat as you are experiencing. You can build/buy a titanium cup.http://all-a-cart.comWelding Cart Kits and accessories

Reply:Nope gamble there usually insulated from the arc
Reply:That doesn't make sense since they thread into the gas lens which threads into the torch head.Torchmate 2x2 CNC with Flashcut CNC controlsHypertherm Powermax45 Esab ET220i Razorweld 195 MigRazorweld 200ac/dc TigTormach 770, Tormach xstechRazorweld, Vipercut/Vipermig, SSC Foot Pedal Dealer
Reply:Quote from the makers of a Ti Cup:"We put our knowledge together to further insulate the cup to prevent any arcing issues from using a conductive material over the traditional alumina ceramics"Not to mention the fact that you can't touch any cup since it'll be hotter than He!!...most of my cups are glowing red, especially when welding 1/4" copper at 310 amps.http://all-a-cart.comWelding Cart Kits and accessories

Reply:Hmmmm the only time I ever had gas lens cup crack  (break)  was on a #30 torch and 5/32 tungsten and the cup screwed on too far and was actually bottomed out on the  brass lens and creating a pressure point that increased with heat.....Spaced it back some and the problem went away....I have some lava cups but never got down to them yet from my supply....  Miller Dynasty 350Twenty Six HammersThree Crow BarsBig Rock

Reply:ive had my pink cups glowing red and dropped them a few times haven't cracked yet from heat. but once when i dropped it hard on the concrete  floor, it was a brand new cup too then it cracked bad luck i guess
Reply:If you are talking about the Toxic/davenport ti cup, yes, there is a threaded insulator that is pressed into the titanium. The titanium is completed insulted from the electrically hot gas lens.

Reply:Originally Posted by ZTFabYes, I was referring to their cup. They have put tons of time and effort in to designing their product(s) and they are not only real world welders they are some of the best.Call "BS" all you want Gamble but you don't know what you're talking about.
Reply:Originally Posted by travisc454I have been googling the hell out of this and cannot find any titanium cups. does anyone have a link. When im welding aluminum at 270+ amps I can have a few of the pink ones crack in a day. They dont make them like they used to (#8). They started making them thin and weak. i used to never have them break unless i dropped them.

Reply:Hahahahaha I have to laugh because I throw them cups away if they even look dirty.....Go through them like toilet paper..I can't stand it when I walk into any of my buddies shops and see cups that are almost melted their so old and black.....In fact I bring a couple of my used ones in my pocket and change them out right there in front of them.....Think about the customer that kinda knows how to tig weld and he wants to hire the "Whip Guy" to weld his parts......He looks at your cup and tungsten sitting there and automatically draws a conclusion.......Is it fair?   pretty much lets a guy know your serious about your trade......   Miller Dynasty 350Twenty Six HammersThree Crow BarsBig Rock
Reply:I get red cups REALLY red all the time with no failures...So what's the big deal anyway?...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Being pretty much self taught I have had to figure things out on my own by trial and error.....I do what I have to do to get the job done and all you guys that work or have worked by yourselves can relate to "Doing what you have to do " Like your foot up on the bench holding a piece your tacking .....Lol  Miller Dynasty 350Twenty Six HammersThree Crow BarsBig Rock
Reply:Bc, my torches would drive you crazy. I use them until they break (if it aint broke, dont fix it). Both of these cups are #8 (Old and new). See how weld craft (now miller) necked it down. My guess is that they did it to save some money. they used to be very thick on the end and would never break. Now i go through a box every week. www.performancealuminumfabrication.com
