Hey guys this is probably not where I need to post this but I need some serious help. This was my great granddads hatchet when he was a child and my brother wanted me to put a handle in it, everything was going good till I drop the head and it hit a solid piece of iron and you see what happened. I can't believe this happened as careful as I was being putting the handle in and out. Whats the best way to try and fix this taking into mind that it's just going to be displayed not used.
Reply:I would bevel the blade side. Preheat both pieces to a few hundred degrees. Weld it up with 7018. Either place it in a bucket of sand. Or wrap it up with house insulation, for over night cool down. Grind the welds down flat.Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:Probably SuperGlue if only for display. Welding it would ruin the look I believe and still be brittle.Weld like a "WELDOR", not a wel-"DERR" MillerDynasty700DX,Dynasty350DX4ea,Dynasty200DX,Li  ncolnSW200-2ea.,MillerMatic350P,MillerMatic200w/spoolgun,MKCobraMig260,Lincoln SP-170T,PlasmaCam/Hypertherm1250,HFProTig2ea,MigMax1ea.
Reply:I agree with Terry. For simply display purposes glue might be the best option. Welding will probably destroy the patina. If I had no choice but to weld for display purposes, I'd 1st determine which side will show. That is the side I'd want to leave alone. On the back side I'd probably bevel about 1/2 way on the blade side, allowing the rest to index the two pieces, then weld with tig. I'd opt for tig simply because it would give me the most control with fill so I'd have the minimum to clean up afterwards. My guess is the heat marks will still be visible from the front though..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
Reply:If it's only for display just use epoxy, jb weld or others.
Reply:I has thinking about using jb weld or some can of glue  but I figured I'd ask the experts first. I agree welding would destroy the look and there are some pretty good glues out there. I ever thought about trying to drill and put a Dow pin to help hold with glue. Guys thanks for the help.
Reply:I've had good luck pinning and then JB weld. Use 1/8" or 1/16" tig rod for the pins. A drill press makes it much easier to get the dowels lined up and drilled properly.   In any case...after drilling...fill the holes with JB weld and fit together.  Best to do a dry fit first....And two pins are better than one IMO.
Reply:Drilled for pins, all I need now is some JB weld. This pic only shows 1 pin but I put another one in it. Guys I really appreciate your help.
