An old school welder I.E. Lincoln pipeliner is revered for its smooth weld, ability to maintain an arc. I've never had a Lincoln apart, I have had an ancient Westinghouse apart. An engine turns perhaps 3600 RPM or 60 RPSecond. If a dc welder were 2 pole it'd give you 120 HZ. My Westinghouse had many poles, I can't remember how many, maybe 20. Would that give 1200 HZ? Looking at a graph I guess it would look like a horizontal time line with frequent humps of voltage. If the graph also showed current, those humps would be in sync. with voltage. This would give very little time without current, and a smooth arc.A Miller Trailblazer, I just learned, is three phase. Other three phase graphs I've seen are three rows of humps less close together, but three overlapping rows. Current never falls to zero. It's my guess this would be equal or better than an old Lincoln in arc quality. Does anyone know both able to shed light on my hypothesis?
Reply:I think the generator output has some filtering between the generator itself and the welding leads to help smooth the output out and reduce the ripples.
Reply:A generator type welder puts out virtually pure DC,no humps.
Reply:Yes, straight line on a meter for the old generator style, my preference, all except the noise.TOOLS AND TOYSSMAW Mid States Inc.
