i have a ranger 8 with an onan 16hp engine which lives outside..  i finally got around to building a plywood doghouse for it so if i had to use it during hurricane irene, it would be protected( i have until now krpt it dry under a tarp which has worked ffine, but now i wanna run it in bad weather, hence the doghouse.  my question is i need to extend the 1 1/2" exhaust  about 10" to get it out of the doghouse.i was planning to stick a piece of black pipe around it.without a hard connection.i dont think this is a problem in terms of backpressure  but wanted to ask in case it is not a good thing to do..thanksLast edited by weldbead; 08-27-2011 at 02:01 PM.
Reply:That exhaust will be HOT.  You should have some type of protection for the plywood.  Wood stoves have a double-wall pass-through to provide protection to flammable wall materials.John
Reply:No big deal but as stated it's gonna get real hot..Other than that...Get your beer cold.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Get some exhaust wrap if there's a concern. It goes by a lot of names, header wrap, manifold wrap, exhaust wrap. A lot of auto parts carry at least some version of it.  It even comes in a nice heavy sleeve form but I doubt if you'll find that at an auto parts. They use tons of the sleeve (and wrap) for commercial generator installations. You should also be able to get a foot or so of flexible exhaust pipe in that size easy. You might have to make some cheezy L bracket to hold the end of it from flopping around but I'd do that for myself rather than have 10 more inches of pipe and still need a flexible connection.Last edited by Sandy; 08-27-2011 at 03:28 PM."The things that will destroy America are prosperity at any price, peace at any price, safety first instead of duty first, the love of soft living and the get rich quick theory of life." -Theodore Roosevelt
Reply:Extending the exhaust is fine.  I have a buddy that did something like that to run a generator in the garage during storms.  It worked fine except the engine heat turned the garage into an oven.  Just make sure that you have some ventilation to deal with the engine heat so that you don't overheat it.Rene
Reply:thanks to all fer the input. i built the box large, the unit is 24 wide and box is 33 wide, plywood comes down to 15" above ground so theres a ton of room for air to get in and out..i think i'll nest the black pipe inside a piece od larger black pipe as suggested..thanks agin...
Reply:I have roughly 8' of added exhaust pipe to my TB302, doesnt seem to cause a single problem.I forgot how to change this.
Reply:might also want to put over a 90 degree bend at the end if it going to exposed to the elements to keep water out of the exhaust system  or a flapperMiller Xmt 350Lincoln Ln-25Ahp 200xSmith Gas Mixer AR/HTig is my Kung FuThrowing down dimes and weaving aboutInstagram http://instagram.com/[email protected]
