Been a while since I got crap from other weldors that I had to work on but I got not one but two this past week. First is a food trailer that a guy had another weldor build for him. All I needed to do was cut the hole bigger to fit the jack through. He said that the guy that built it didn't have a torch to do it. I wouldn't have touched any thing else on this trailer. It's a wonder it even made it to my shop let alone back to the guys house. There was no license plate or place to put it and no lights. The only thing that held the propane bottle on the tongue was the hose that was attached to it. It set only about 3" off the ground in the back. He said it was made on a pop up camper trailer. Reply:The other job was a roll cage for an early model Bronco. The guy said it was tacked together by a "professional" and just had to be welded together. I wondered why the "professional" couldn't weld it together. This may be the absolute worst fit up I've eer seen. Attached Images
Reply:Feeling for you bro!!No fun on junk like that. There's so much competition the real welders don't get the job cause they bid it realistically, and some donkey could do it cheaper...
Reply:OOOOOOOOEEEEEEEE!!!!That's a nice one right there! Rollin' redneck rest-o-ront.License plate? Reply:I actually did LOL at the rollcage. The "filler" piece in the middle picture is awesome.
Reply:I like the "...tacked by a professional welder." Hahaha, yeah right. The true definition of the word "professional," just means one has accepts payment for the job. It's not a word that ever means that someone has "skill" or even "knowledge" in a sub just, for that matter.Lincoln Power Mig 216Lincoln AC/DC-225/125Miller 625 X-Treme PlasmaMiller 211 Forney 95FI-A 301HF 91110Victor Journeyman O/PMilwaukee DaytonMakita Baileigh NRA Life Member

Reply:Holy hell...the aforementioned, "professional" who did that "cage" needs to be taken out back and whipped with a rubber hose. Twice.http://all-a-cart.comWelding Cart Kits and accessories
Reply:It's truly sad when people don't take pride in their work. What's even worse is the person that made that was probably proud of it and thought that was some of their finest craftsmanship.

Reply:WOW!!! You get all the fun stuff. It seems no matter what particular profession, there is no shortage of hacks with no apparent skill or experience that will take on real projects. Most construction jobs I repaired for people in the past cost the same or more than I would have quoted for the entire job, just to fix what was done.

Reply:Thank You for posting this and the photos. It makes me think that there's hope for my welding. I have a long way to go, and I'm reading this forum a couple times a day, plus getting as much hood time as I can. Reply:I told the guy with the roll cage to only think of it as ornamental because it wasn't to be considered a real roll cage.

Reply:Careful with that stuff there Bob, they may pull you into the "liability loop" where just because you did some work on it, you get sued to the hilt by ambulance chasing lawyers when that booger shack goes careening across the road and kills a family all because junior welder's trailer tongue fell off because the welds broke (prove that you didn't make that weld). It kills me that that equipment like this is even allowed on the road. Up here in the Toronto area, the cops would pull that POS over and burn it right at the side of the road!! That classic roll cage should be mounted on the pro welders front lawn and displayed as abstract art, look out Henry Moore!! Reply:My first teacher in electrical school climbed the job ladder until he retired as Chief Electrical Inspector for the State of Vermont. Over the years he often passed out news of lawsuit results. Rarely is the fly by night who killed someone held responsible. Frequently it is the professional who recognized the danger but failed to correct it. As an electrician with 80,000 hours experience it astounds me to hear people here and elsewhere talk about the "professional" electrician they found under a rock somewhere. This "professional" did an 8 hour job for a case of beer. I would avoid this work. Lay it on the table. Tell the customer you don't want to contribute to their killing themselves.
Reply:The only known investment the "professional" welder has in the "decorative" roll cage is tacking it up. It is not known who did the fitting and I might suspect the owner.---Meltedmetal

Reply:Just another case of the "Misfits"....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Originally Posted by ZTFabThat would just mean the "professional" weldor wasn't professional enough to know that the fabrication/fitting of that cage was sub-par and ultimately deadly for its intended purpose. He was negligent, either way. That "cage" should be scrapped.
Reply:Originally Posted by MeltedmetalOr he did know and that's why he didn't weld it up. As for it's intended purpose it might be to impress the girls down at the Tastee Freeze on Saturday night but he better hope they're not welders.---Meltedmetal
Reply:Originally Posted by richeyWow........Hope I don't meet him on the highway. Many don't realize a crap roll cage is worse than none at all. You get rear ended at 5mph a weld comes loose and then the mitered tube takes a core sample of your skull.A friends girlfriend from highschool burned to death while people looked on unable to save her, she had flipped her brand new jeep, got pinned between the seat and the 'style bar' after it had buckled in half. The gas started venting out and ignited. As for the trailer, I think the most ethical thing to do is cut the tongue off with a portaband and tell him to find a real trailer to take it off your property to the scrap yard. No need to emit more carbon emissions than necessary by torching it, however it may spontaneously combust when put to use for its intended purpose. Sheesh...
Reply:I believe I'd rather have a role cage built out of PVC than that pile of crap. Funny what people will pay for and be happy with
Reply:Originally Posted by ZTFabYou seem to be awfully defensive of this "professional weldor".Perhaps you are the one who tacked this abomination together. I can think of no other reason to defend such pi$$ poor work and poor judgement.

I'm not defending the "professional welder" so much as not condemning him on what I consider insufficient evidence. Nor am I suggesting that the "roll cage" is more than decorative and not a good decoration at that. My person suspicion is that the "professional welder" is the owner of the Bronco but I don't have evidence to support that hypothesis either. Perhaps you and I have different views as to what is sufficient evidence for a hanging or you see more information here than I do.---Meltedmetal
Reply:Originally Posted by ZTFabRight. So if the "professional weldor" is nothing but a straw man used by the owner to hide behind for a poor quality job then condemning the "professional", or not, is irrelevant. It doesn't take a clairvoyant to see the horrendous work that has been performed. In fact, I'm pretty sure that Helen Keller could construct a more sound structure, she would definitely be able to tell a "hot" weld from a "cold" weld. "Somebody" made that abortion and is expecting it to perform in a capacity that, either structural or not, is capable of killing or maiming. If the owner of the Bronco is single handedly responsible for building that atrocity and is OK with the possible repercussions of what may happen to him and/or his passengers then so be it. He should be able, and willing, to finish the job by himself and not expect someone else to take on the responsibility of making it safe. If other people have had their hands on it then there are multiple parties to blame as the owner should not have accepted a "cage" made in that manner, paid for or not.Somewhere in the world there is a group of lawyers salivating like Pavlovian dogs at the thought of a huge payday as situations like this come to light. |
