My mom saw some of these at a local garden lining a path.  She wanted me to build her some, so I did.  I am still in the process of painting them Attached ImagesThe Lord has declared, "This is my work and my glory--to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man"  Moses 1:39Link: My name is John, and I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.-- ColdCreekWorks.com --

Reply:Welding round stock to flat stock is difficult.  You have a large concave cavity to fill. Can't really see the welds on your project.Generally I try to set the heat according to the thicker stock, shove the rod into the cavity, and run fairly slow in order to properly fill the cavity.  Running fast can leave you with huge potholes  Slow, hot, and watch for the fill.  Start your run on the "open" edge of the joint where the round begins, then finish up on the continuous end.  You won't burnback your material on the open end because the beginning of any weld is always cold."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:I like them too nice idea, I need more metal in my yard.thermal arc mst400, va4000 feeder, lincoln 175 min, victor torches, miller s32p feeder, air arc k4000 for work.

Reply:Interesting project.  Just stick them into the ground?  Or will you have a sleeve that gets pounded into the ground and then the plant holder's post slips into that?  The best laid schemes ... Gang oft agley ...

Reply:Just finished painting them.  43 of them.Unfortunately, as I was getting ready to type this up I heard some metal banging, go outside and find my neighbors twin boys (probably 2 or 3 years old) pushing them all over into each other and banging them up.  I corrected the issue, but.........   One picture is of the 18" anchors (poor some sackreat around them).  I built them so you can dig the hole with a small post hole digger instead of a shovel (if desired) Attached ImagesLast edited by jdh239; 07-06-2011 at 07:44 PM.The Lord has declared, "This is my work and my glory--to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man"  Moses 1:39Link: My name is John, and I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.-- ColdCreekWorks.com --
Reply:Great idea for flea market / farmers market.. I hope u do well. If u don't mind me asking; what is the time and material vs selling price. I imagine you could ask at least $25 for one. Maybe even more at a farmers market. Great idea!I was at a harbor freight store earlier this afternoon and saw that rolling bender. But was a little confused on what size material the dies actually took. I also saw they had another die set. Im interested in building garden benches. A friend of mine builds " custom mexican tile" benches,  but uses bought frames or cement. Im curious if I can help him out at all.

Reply:The look good.Mine fit inside of another pipe with rebar criss-crossed at the bottom that get cemented into the ground. For bending, I did the HF roller the first time.  I found it easier to make a jig on the table and bend the bar manually around it.  It worked out much better (had to use a helper bar)The Lord has declared, "This is my work and my glory--to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man"  Moses 1:39Link: My name is John, and I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.-- ColdCreekWorks.com --
Reply:I cut my jig out of metal, but you could easily use wood.  I cut two pieces here.  The holes were to just weld the two pieces together so it was thick enough. The Lord has declared, "This is my work and my glory--to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man"  Moses 1:39Link: My name is John, and I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.-- ColdCreekWorks.com --

Reply:Originally Posted by that'll_buff_outYour bending also looked very repeatable.... did you usea jig for that too? A brake with level? I'm going old school, aka smacking flat stock with a hammer in the vise and a magnetic level. lol
Reply:What kind of welder do you have?

Reply:jdh239:Can you post some pictures of the finished die. I'd like to see how you put it together. What thickness is the material in your video?Sign on East Texas payphone: Calls to God 40 cents......it's a local call...
Reply:My die is currently buried under a lot of steel, so I can't get it out, but essentially, it is a little more that 180 degrees of a circle.  I stacked 2 - 1/4" plates on top of each other and welded them together (plug welds).  I didn't think it was thick enough, so I faced the curve with 1"x1/8" material (or thinner).  I will see if I can get pictures of it, but I have to find another bin to put my scrap in.The Lord has declared, "This is my work and my glory--to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man"  Moses 1:39Link: My name is John, and I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.-- ColdCreekWorks.com --
Reply:How long were your cold rolled and flat bar pieces for the top? Are they larger in size as length of the pot holder increases? Awesome idea by the way.
Reply:I made mine all the same size as it fits most flower baskets.I would measure them and let you know, but my son broke my measuring tape, and I can't drive to the store to by a new one due to my right foot having a torn ligament in it.  I think the bottom of the flat bar, before the bend, was 9 to 9.5 inches, and then after the bend another 5 inches.  The arch was just long enough to connect everything together. It has been a year or more since I made them, so I don't remember exactly. The Lord has declared, "This is my work and my glory--to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man"  Moses 1:39Link: My name is John, and I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.-- ColdCreekWorks.com --
