Hello All,I am looking for a small inverter machine to use is commercial kitchen repair work.My shop is 100% Miller but once I started to research small portable inverter machines I have become somewhat puzzled by the issues the the Maxstar has had. I know it's been out for awile but again these small inverters are new to me. I am a Synchrowave guy I looks like ESAB and Thermal Arc all have the <20 pounds machines too. Thanks for your advice.Kindly,Tom
Reply:I'm going through the same thing right now. looking for a lower amperage, dual input voltage DC ONLY tig w/HF start. I have it narrowed down to the maxstars (150stl or 200sd) and the Thermal Arc 201ts. I have never struck an arc with either, What I like about the maxstars, I too have all blue machines, and am happy with them. the maxstar has more indepth reviews available to read, and haven't heard a bad thing YET. it is rated all the way down to 5 amps. What I like about the Thermal arc 201ts; PRICE, can get the 201ts with remote and all for cost of 150stl powersource only. My LWS is an authorized thermal arc dealer/service center (if any warranty issues arise). remote finger tip control, i've never used one, but a job next week I will be inside a truck welding on the firewall, this may come in handy! the extra amperage of the 201 vs. the 150stl.What I don't like; Miller, I don't have anything that is steering me away from the maxstar other than the lower cost of the TD201tsWhat I don't like; Thermal Arc, unfamiliar brand to me, 10amp low end rating on the current, prefer the straight through gas solenoid of the maxstar vs the seperate of the thermal, but thats me really looking for something bad (maxstar 200 and up have the same setup). What i've found searching for info on Weldingweb regarding these subjects; Lots of brand loyalty. People trying to convince me to spend more money on more machine than I need (this is not my only welder). There have been some real helpful advice that has led me to think and narrow down what I am looking for and what I want/really need. realistically, 115 & ac isn't going hand in hand, and I don't really need it. I would like to hear more from people who actually own and use a 201ts & Maxstar 150stl/200sd vs. opinion from those who haven't used them.My purchase is strictly business, and I am not doing my bank account any favors by spending 4x's as much on a machine with 4x's the features than I actually need or already have with others. After alot of looking around cyberweld.com has the best prices on both machines free shipping, and no commifornia taxLast edited by sausage450r; 05-18-2014 at 04:45 PM.'14 HTP invertig 221Thermal Arc 201ts'15 HTP 2400'13 Hypertherm Powermax 30Esab 875Esab 251Clark Metal Servicespecializing in stainless steel exhaust systems
Reply:Htp makes one that is dc/hf tig and it's inverter. It's the htp invertig 131. I am thinking about getting one.

If you just need DC current, there's a slew of options out there, depending on what you wanna spend. If you want AC/DC, it gets expensive real fast. The Thermal Arc (Tweco) TIGs are proven & less expensive than blue or red. ESAB has some fine offerings as well, backed by a global manufacturer with an excellent, long standing reputation both here & abroad.I don't comment on the import inverters (what I mean are ones of the less expensive nature, not backed by a reputable, long standing manufacturer) so if you are looking in that area, I can't tell you what's better one way or the other.Either way. Expect to spend some coin for an AC/DC inverter TIG.I have a Maxstar 150 STL & never had a lick of problems with it in the 8 yrs I've had it. Great little machine for smaller DC welding work. Sausage is right on about Cyberweld. About the best prices on the net. I buy local whenever possible & support my LWS. Not everyone has that option or has an excellent company to deal with either tho. Weldfabulous & IOC are also very good on price, as well as being brick & mortar stores with real employees & a showroom.Good luck with it.IMHO of course
Reply:What are your amp requirements???The Thermal arc 95S is a decent little unit.
Reply:I would buy the Thermal Arc 201. Puzzled as to why they don't offer pulsing in the DC only machines?
Reply:footpedals make okay pulsers. the maxstar 150 STH has a simple pulse option.... but at the price of it you are comming close to diversion 180 pricing (has ac but no pulse either)....I never really use the pulse at work. I've never really needed it for production work, I can get the same effect lightly manipulating my torch head while on a turntable or otherwise (80% of my welding is 321 stainless, 5% 4130 15% various alumn. titanium, magnesium, inconel nitronics and other various alloys)'14 HTP invertig 221Thermal Arc 201ts'15 HTP 2400'13 Hypertherm Powermax 30Esab 875Esab 251Clark Metal Servicespecializing in stainless steel exhaust systems
