So, I found this slightly humerus....I was watching an episode of "Sons of Guns" where they hired on a new shop hand.  The boss asked the new guy if he knew how to use a TIG, which he confidently said "yes!". (and discovery channel kindly defined TIG as "welding machine" in the subtitles). after showing him where all the stuff was, they show the new guy welding with a mig! and poorly at that...its phenomenal how these TV characters come to be called "experts" at anything...I just want to see the scene where they get a shipment of "TIG wire" from the LSW and then proceed to scratch their heads trying to get the filler rods into the mig... Reply:A "professional"company using HF mask and a weldor that can't weld. Hmmmm
Reply:On Howe and Howe Tech they couldn't even figure the displacement needed to make a snowmobile float.Professionally pathetic,Maybe.
Reply:remember the saying "I'm not a welder but I played one on TV"

Reply:Haha I love that show but to be honest, their welds, well, S U C K ! ! !Especially the ones on that machete thing that they made. They literally looked like bird ****. My thoughts are that if I was running a shop selling things for thousands of dollars on a daily basis, that I'd have the nicest blue equipment known to man inside of it. Maybe they have a deal with Harbor Freight tho, they use their welders and hoods, and pneumatic grinders, and I even saw a 4x6 bandsaw in the back ground in one of their episodes. Now I love my 4x6, but It wouldn't be my first choice if I were them... Its not all bad tho, they do have a miller thunderbolt...[Account Abandoned 8/8/16 Please Do Not Attempt Contact Or Expect A Reply]. See you on YouTube! -ChuckE2009
Reply:Everything they do on that show is a joke!  The girl is the only one with some common sense. Pisses me off really how every one of them talk like they are the best and everything they are doing has never been done before. Just goes to show that if you talk the talk you can always find some idiot to open their wallet though.
Reply:Nobody can really weld on ANY of these reality shows..Did you ever look close to any welds on OCC?Horrible.Did anyone ever see the episode of Deadliest Catch where Sig welded on a piston to the pot landing and the first time they tried to use it the whole piston launched into the Bearing Sea?At least he admitted he can't weld but tried anyway.I laugh and cringe all at the same time...At least Bobby on Swamp Loggers has a real pro come in at times to do repairs.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.

Reply:I'd prolly watch a show where everything is done right
Reply:Originally Posted by BistineauIf you want to watch a show on TV where things are done right, watch Holmes On Homes on HGTV. It's not about welding, though sometimes there is some welding going on. He fixes people's houses where a so-called expert contractor screwed people with a p!ss poor remodel or something. He will totally gut the area of the house in question, pointing out all that is messed up. Then he and his crew fix all the previous mistakes and make it right. It's actually produced by "Make It Right Productions". A lot of times they find things during tear out that weren't apparent initially, and fix them ,too. They take on structural, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, drywall, roofing, etc.One of my nieghbors does the same kind of work and claims Mike Holmes is "MY HERO". He's run across some of the sames issues as the show and fixes them correctly or calls in someone else who may have the needed license and skills. You would be amazed at some of the things that are uncovered in this show, where someone who was supposed to be a expert on something left people with a shoddy job, and took thier money too.

Reply:Getting back to the original post. the guy admits that he's no good at "this style" oif welding, when they give him the mig welder instead of a Tig machine. in later episodes they show him tiging. They also ultrasound his welds on a receiver that was cut into 7 peices. he welded it back together and only had 1 of the 14 welds have anything wrong. and he redid the weld and it was good. Granted. They never showed the actual weld. Just the finished surface after grinding/machining.Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that these guys on TV should be used as examples of good welding. what I'm saying is continuity in television is worse than in movies. There are no problems. There are only solutions. Reply:Of corse these companies are going to get sent free stuff. they are high profile. simple as that. almost free advetising. I'm sure the companies have to pay to get there stuff un blurred. I'm a fan of Howe and Howe as well. at least they are pulling people out of welding school and giving them jobs. not just pulling people off the street who say they can weld. Granted the guy on Sons of guns did bring in an example of his work, and it worked. always a good thing when highering someone to do a skilled labor possision. as for Norm. yes it gets the job done right the first time. but he's very dry, which is why he's not on network TV. no drama to catch people up in.However you will notice a trend with all of these shows. there is always a shop idiot. either someone who's screwing up, doesn't know S from his elbow, or is just super lazy, or all of the above COUGH'paulsr'COUGH. in any shop, that person wouldn't last a week, but in a TV show, they create entertainment. There are no problems. There are only solutions. It's your duty to determine the right one.Hobart Handler 210Airco 225 Amp MSM Stinger

Reply:i wouldnt let that red jacket place build me a gun, maybe a box to put a gun in....  i really like that new haas vmc sitting there idle all the time.. i've seen it run one time, and they had to call a guy in from haas to run it then..  i like swamp people though,i would love to go watch them gator hunt in real life, looks like it would be fun for a day,  and that guy in the bibs looks like he can build a pretty nice boat... i like the younger woodworker Tommy Mcdonald that comes on pbs on Saturday afternoon, hes pretty slick..think his show is called Rough Cut..tackleexperts.comwww.necessityjigs.comhttps://www.facebook.com/groups/mach...dingequipment/

Reply:not commenting on the actual welding, but did anyone else see the gears of war 3 trike that PJD put out? was on last nights episode of sr. vs jr. I'm not a huge fan of most of the bikes either put out. but I've got to admit Jr is stepping up his game. They also talked about the voting results from the cadilac build on discovery.com. HOLY S thats just plain imbarassing.I want Junkyard wars back too. that show was great. my uncle even bet me I couldn't make a trebuchet one easter while we were watching it. about 2.5 hrs later we were lounching softballs over our fence 50' away. There are no problems.
