Prank Shark Project: St John's River N. Fl.  A hair-brained idea concocted after much beer while hang'n w/ my pals around the fire pit.  If all goes well when deployed, a fake 12'-15' bull shark will detach from its hidden underwater lair and surface aprx 2-300' out then swim parallel to shore for 1-200' as it passes by a river front bar.  There, at the "Toothless Tavern,"  an accomplice will alert the toothless patrons to the aberration and video their reaction.  The prank fish will then be drawn under water again in route to a "release pulley" anchored 20' deep and aprox 1-200' directly in front of our boat house.  Upon contact, the pulley will disengage from its submerged anchor and the shark will be redirected 90 degrees from its original path, (miss-direction), an illusion trick to help keep my dumb *** from being busted.  Using an old drill press motor rigged with a remote, the shark and the pulley attached to a heavy drag weight will be reeled in under water and out of sight beneath our boat house where it will trip a power kill switch. Reply:the "release pulley" a key component needed to cause miss direction of prank shark.  I had no idea how to fabricate it, i just knew i needed it so I decided to tackle this first. Reply:what could possibly go wrong with this plan...Im going to a lot of trouble just to get in trouble.  Today I drew out the template, finished project is going to be about 14' long.  I laminated styrofoam together to form the front base section and keeping as close to scale as possible I carved out a removable dorsal fin that is 24' tall.  Along with the tail fin, It'll all be covered with fabric and painted with great detail to look like the real deal.  Dorsal fin assembly to be attached to alum plate, the front release mechanism, swim action spoon devise and rear sections will also be aluminium and tig welded together. Reply:Bull sharks, one of three known man eaters are well documented to inhabit fresh water rivers so the prank is, at least in theory, conceivable.  Testing and set up will have to happen during the cover of night.  By the following sunset there should be plenty of victims at the river front pub that showed up for the barbecue served every Sunday.  the stage: Attached Images"Steel is weak. Reply:Beer, plenty of beer is the key to success, so the close proximity to the pub is important here. I think most of the lochness, big foot stories would have died centuries ago if it wasn't for beer. Reply:yeah, success or not.  We'll post videos, news stories and or...arrest reports.  The goal is to spend as little as possible but as much as it takes to create a believable shark sighting event that river folk will exaggerate stories about for years.  While I offered up my time and labor for this gag, my pals will have to cough up their fair share on materials.  We got a guy to help w/ rigging a fail safe tow in motor after we showed him what it was for.  This week i'll swing by the local recycle center to pick up 1"x6" aluminum rafter material used to build screen enclosures, light weight material that should work well for prank shark's rear sections. Does anyone know if this alloy is weldable?  photos to follow.Last edited by badknot; 05-14-2012 at 08:40 PM."Steel is weak. Reply:Recently I visited a large taxidermy outfit that mount bull sharks to get a better perspective of scale, turns out I'm going to have to shorten this thing and the tail sticks out of the water too much.  We water tested it last week at the river and I was expecting complete failure, so anything above that would be considered a success but it was close to complete failure. Unlike the prototype video in earlier post, the swim action wouldn't work at all on this thing and set up was a pain, needs to be improved.  it cruised along at the right level in the water pretty good though, I just need to figure out the swim motion along with other supporting rigging issues. Other projects taking precedence right now though but it'll get done.  It's just going to take some time, possibly months. Attached Images"Steel is weak. Reply:That is good I bet it will be on the news. You have really put a lot of work into it.  One suggestion though, you  should look at using a sea anchor instead of the dragging anchor so you don't get hooked up on something.
Reply:Now that is really funny S***!  I can't wait to see it run.  good luck with that project.---No good deed goes unpunished---

Reply:The prototype looks to have the fin only sticking out 1 side for the swim action. why did you do both sides on the full size model? There are no problems. There are only solutions. It's your duty to determine the right one.Hobart Handler 210Airco 225 Amp MSM Stinger

Reply:a link to an alternative energy project that harnesses water current, check out the video. the design wouldn't work for us because they employ computer software to mechanically alternate the angle of the fin to create the swimming motion.http://www.biopowersystems.com/biostream.htmlLast edited by badknot; 07-15-2012 at 12:02 AM."Steel is weak.
