Reply:Originally Posted by irish fixitTrue but the boom has to be designed to handle both winches so pulling on only one puts twice as much stress on it compared to design. That combined with over sized cables made the winch mount the weakest point.
Reply:Careful washing that thing, it might just fall apart.  Or you might discover a whole mess of things to fix.  Good luck

This is why you don't let just anybody stretch a truck. No prep just run a bead over the butted seam and this is what you get. Reply:Interesting how the crack runs up the piece. I was thinking these had been bent from plate or where pieces of frame but I think they're actually pieces of square or rectangular tube cut in half.  I know the uprights to holding the back of the boom are made that way. This must of been the weld seam of the tube.  All I've got for now.Millermatic 252XMT 304'sDynasty 280DXHypertherm PowerMax 1250Miller Trailblazer 302 EFIOptima PulserXR feeder and XR Edge gun and more athttp://members.dslextreme.com/users/waynecook/index.htm

In the mean time no getting under the truck. Seals should be in tomorrow so we can get the cylinder back in the stiff leg probably the day after tomorrow since I've got to go out of town after lunch tomorrow.  A shot of the two stages of boom removed to rebuild the cylinders. Reply:SO, is this like a wrecker service that would say, be dispatched and roll up on a wreck on I-40?  No offense to the owner, but I'm pretty sure if that showed up to work a wreck here the trooper would have a red tag on it before they ever stretched a winch cable out...  I can just imagine hooking to a rollover rig and pulling your tow truck in two right in the middle of the highway...  When oilfield started back up here in the late 90's, there was so much junk that people were literally dragging out of the weeds and brush and putting back on the road it was horrible.  I hadn't bought my Pete yet then, so I was still using my '80 model Mack which is a winch tractor.  Got pulled over and inspected constantly...  They always thought it was "oilfield".  One finally told me it was one of the nicest oilfield trucks he had inspected in years.  I told him I don't really do oilfield, specialize in pipeline, but mainly natural gas.  Oilfield has been good enough in recent years that most of the local companies have finally upgraded equipment, so it's not as bad now.-------------------------Chemetron AC/DC 300 HFSnap-On MM300L Lincoln SP140 Lincoln AC/DC 225g Lincoln SA200 Lincoln SA200 Miller Bobcat 225GVictor torchesH&M and Mathey beveling machinesMcElroy Plastic pipe fusion

Reply:So Irish, how did it go?
Reply:It looks like it still rolls, I'd roll that hunk of junk straight to the scrapyard.
Reply:Still working on it. Not a lot of updates welding wise yet.   We got the stiff leg cylinder rebuilt and installed. The two boom cylinders are rebuilt and out of the way. Finally got the winch apart for a full inspection.   After calling about winch and parts price then talking to the owner we're going to replace the A frame bearing on the idle end with a new one. I would braze it but there's really not enough meat to satisfy me considering the stress that's on it. A new one is about $600. The gear case which also has a leg broken on it is another story. It's $1800 for a new one. There's also enough meat for a good brazing job. Plus I can reinforce it with a plate. I'm satisfied that it'll be alright.   Everything else in the winch looks good. Not much wear on the worm wheel or damage to anything else.   I could probably braze the idle end and be alright but it just nags at me that it's not quite enough. Reinforcing options on that end are more limited. I'm still studying the problem. The parts are soaking to get them clean right now and when I get started I'll know better how well the cast takes the brazing.Millermatic 252XMT 304'sDynasty 280DXHypertherm PowerMax 1250Miller Trailblazer 302 EFIOptima PulserXR feeder and XR Edge gun and more athttp://members.dslextreme.com/users/waynecook/index.htm
Reply:Thanks for the update   I know it's "WeldingWeb", but I enjoy all phases of these kinds of jobs you do - and always learn something.  If you're willing to post up more about rebuilding the stiff leg and two boom cylinders, I think you would find a happy audience here too!  I figure at some point in the future I'll have to learn about rebuilding cylinders - even if not to do it myself, to at the bare minimum understand the process and steps involved in the job.  Kind of reminds me of the thread you did a while back on fixing a motor for an oilfield application (if I remember correctly), where you had to do a ton of machining to make a monster angle plate - maybe it was not all welding related, but it was awesome!
Reply:Thanks.   I had a LOT of interruptions last week making progress slow. What we did get done was mostly on the cleaning and taking apart stage. We're fixing to get into the more interesting stages next week so look for updates then.  It's a little late for the rebuilding of the cylinders. I do have some pics of what the seals looked like when I got them apart. I didn't have much time to do any documenting of the installing of the stiff leg cylinder. Jobs like that require full attention to what everybody is doing in order to keep it safe.   If it works out I'll try to setup the camera when we stab the boom sections back in place. That's a interesting operation for sure.Millermatic 252XMT 304'sDynasty 280DXHypertherm PowerMax 1250Miller Trailblazer 302 EFIOptima PulserXR feeder and XR Edge gun and more athttp://members.dslextreme.com/users/waynecook/index.htm
Reply:Ok here's some pics of the boom cylinders while they where apart.  As you can see the seals where pretty much gone.  This is what water in the hydraulic system does to seals. Depending on temperature. If it's hot then it doesn't take to long to do this.Millermatic 252XMT 304'sDynasty 280DXHypertherm PowerMax 1250Miller Trailblazer 302 EFIOptima PulserXR feeder and XR Edge gun and more athttp://members.dslextreme.com/users/waynecook/index.htm
Reply:Here's some A1 top notch work done by somebody in the past. It's the back of the stiff leg cylinder. Reply:Wow, that's one of those big jobs to be proud of, if the owner doesn't try to cheap out on you. On some of the old repairs, Ive seen better work on farm equipment done with a buzzbox. That frame rail weld makes me queasy. lol.
Reply:Irish,I've seen some pretty nappy work done on hydraulic cylinders before and that's right up there with the worst of it.   Even the weld on that thread-o-let doesn't look all that good.   It would be my guess that the ID of that cylinder probably needs to be honed before it goes back together also.
