I have gave the .035" 211 another shot after doing a bunch of reading and a ton of help from CEP. I'm guilty of using the point of the chipping hammer as this was only practice. Did find out that the slag stays hot and likes to stick to skin.First pass 19v@230ipmSecond, 19v@220ipmSome multi pass experimentation19.5v@235ipmMy "custom" F/C nozzleI dont know if it was me or the machine but it seemed like the wire was burning back a little and then running normal during the weld.Sent from my SPH-L710 using TapatalkLast edited by Chris T.; 05-24-2014 at 07:03 PM.TOO MANY TOOLS & NO MORE SPACE
Reply:Looks pretty good your bead profile says more time at the edges and less in the middle. I never liked flux core much but it has it's uses especially on those windy days.Thermal arc 211iCk flex-loc 150 & 130Clamps, saws & grindersHarbor freight 80 amp inverter
Reply:Thanks, I will give that a try. The wind is exactly why I wanted to start using flux core. You only grind out so many bad welds before wanting to switch.Sent from my SPH-L710 using TapatalkTOO MANY TOOLS & NO MORE SPACE
Reply:If the wire is burning back a little, maybe you need to turn up the wire speed just a touch. Another thing, are you using serrated drive rolls? Also check the tension on the drive rolls by holding the gun in you right hand, with a glove on your left hand, point the gun at a slight angle into your left hand, and pull the trigger. Let the wire bounce off your left hand. If the wire curls, and doesn't stop the tension of the drive rolls is OK. That 3-pass fillet is looking pretty good. Keep burning wire, you'll get it down in no time.Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400

Reply:Looking at the welds it looks likes the speed might need to be turned up a little or the volts turned down.On the miller 252 and 251 we ran 0.035 inch NR-211 and I think we ran with 18 to 19 volts, up 270ipm, depending on the machine.old Miller spectrum 625 Lincoln SP-135 T, CO2+0.025 wireMiller model 250 and WP-18V torchCraftsman 100amp AC/DC and WP-17V torchCentury 115-004 HF arc stabilizerHome made 4 transformer spot welderHome made alternator welder

Reply:If you're not in a production mode, that slag comes off a whole lot easier if you give it a few minutes. Work on something else and come back and drag an old file or something across it and it falls right off. . Wire wheel if it suits you. Also with self shielded there is a short section at the end that is an indicator of what is called "pre-heat". That short section from the burn off at the end of the wire back to the tip. Hopefully there is about 1/4 to 3/8ths that is blackish and a teeny tiny section from there to the tip that isn't. Not something that you obsess over but something that you can observe over a period of time and refine your settings a bit. If you notice it is pre-heating clear back into the tip after glancing at it every now and then, you can either turn up the wire feed a tad or down on the voltage a tad. If there is very little pre-heat then do the opposite, turn up the voltage or down on the wire feed. Add salt and pepper to suit your tastes. Reply:CEP, I'm going to order some lengths of flat bar Tuesday morning for a lot of practice. I darn sure need it.I did the tension test and the wire curls but when welding I'm still having the erratic feeding issue. Now I'm second guessing leaving the shiny stuff Tried different volts and wfs but its doing it on and off. Thinking it might be the standard mig liner is too flexible for the 035. I ordered an 035/045 liner for my F/C gun so when they get here hopefully it will help.Sandy,That is alot of good information. The slag seems real thin and easily rakes off with the hammer. I did get a knotted end brush for the inside corners. Here is a picture of the end of the wire. Dont know if you can make it out but there is about 5/16"-3/8" of preheated wire and about 1/4" of shiny wire. Sent from my SPH-L710 using TapatalkTOO MANY TOOLS & NO MORE SPACE

Reply:Did a little experiment before lunch and switched the xmt to stick and the suitcase to cc. The wire seemed to run so much smoother and had that nice frying sound.Amps-130WFS-180Slight weaveThe slag was missing in some spots so might have to play with the settings a little.Sent from my SPH-L710 using TapatalkTOO MANY TOOLS & NO MORE SPACE

Reply:I will try turning the amps down to around 110-115. Did not think to look at the readout on the suitcase to see if it was showing volts or amps and how much. Never ran it on cc before.Sent from my SPH-L710 using TapatalkTOO MANY TOOLS & NO MORE SPACE
Reply:I've never been one to look at gauges. Majority of the time on engine drives they didn't have gauges, if they did you wouldn't trust them anyway. Can't tell you how many certification tests I've taken where they had duct tape over the gauges on the welding machines. First part of the test was to set the machine. If the machine wasn't within manufacturer's specs for the wire, test over! And you get to go home early, oh and without a job! CV engine drives didn't come out until the early 1980s. We ran Innershield on CC only engine drives for years.Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400

Reply:I believe we have success. This bead just felt "right", I only wish I had CEP's talent to walk up to this thing and set it. That day will come eventually. There are two different welds made with the same settings just to make sure the results were pretty close.Just for reference, on the 3/16" angle I had the machine set to 110a wfs@190 and after the weld the display on the suitcase showed 16.7v.Sent from my SPH-L710 using TapatalkTOO MANY TOOLS & NO MORE SPACE
Reply:Originally Posted by SandyNot that that is good or bad but it makes about as much sense as putting duct tape over the speedometer and tach then taking a test.  You could do it, maybe I could, lots of folks could, but why? Seems like the more info available the better things are going to work out.
Reply:Originally Posted by CEPThe employers want to know, you know how to set a machine, by looking at the results of a weld. As you know, there is more to welding than just pulling a trigger. Chris those are looking great! Now when you're about to stop, shorten up your arc length, and point the gun straight into the metal, or even backwards a little to help fill in those craters.

Reply:Ive run lots of 211 and 21B on miller Vs machines with an SA200 driving them. With .045 wire it seemed if I set the machine for the desired weld performance with 1/8" or 5/32" 7018, that was close to the wire deposit I would get... With a bit of feed speed tweaking. Just my machine experience. It was pretty much the same on my Bobcat with CC. Now with the Trailblazers I have Its CV all the way. Really clean CV for A small machine.
Reply:I think the SA-200s have a beautiful arc for Innershield, and 21-B.  Attached ImagesDon’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400

Reply:I really appreciate everyones help with this wire. I ran it on cc the rest of the afternoon and it worked pretty good. When my flat bar for coupons, wire and gun come in I'll post some more practice pics to make sure the universe didn't line up today for everything to work.Sent from my SPH-L710 using TapatalkTOO MANY TOOLS & NO MORE SPACE

Reply:I'm supprised that hasn't happened allready. Down here in Fl, the shop is probably a small part of the power bill as the ac runs 24/7.Sent from my SPH-L710 using TapatalkTOO MANY TOOLS & NO MORE SPACE

Reply:Hopefully I will, guess you havent seen my attempts at pipe weldingEven the surplus yard gets $1/lb on steel pipe that is too rusted and pitted to practice on without chucking it in the lathe and skimming it off. I'll have to break down one day and order some new 4".Sent from my SPH-L710 using TapatalkTOO MANY TOOLS & NO MORE SPACE
Reply:Got the wire today. Airgas tried to get me for another $30. Ordered the roll @ $5.38/lb to ship to store and when I went to pay for it the price was $83.00??? Ended up getting it for the cheaper price but can't believe they would try that crap. When I ordered it they wanted a deposit but don't take cash? Would not let me pay in full either? Is it normal for it to come in a bag? No box?Sent from my SPH-L710 using TapatalkLast edited by Chris T.; 05-29-2014 at 08:51 PM.TOO MANY TOOLS & NO MORE SPACE

Reply:I made a lot of money running that wire. In 1982 I bought a Miller Trailblazer 55D, with a wire feeder. Paid $9378.00 for it. Started this bridge project in 1983. When it came time to weld the pre-cast concrete panels on the footings I rented the welder to the company for $600.00 a month. I came within 3-months of paying for the welder.  Attached ImagesDon’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400

Reply:Oh I made nothing but money with that machine. My tax accountant was floored at how much I could rent it for per month. I rented it to the companies I worked for, and I worked for union wages. I sold it in 1995 for $4,500.00. The Dynasty has been great! Not one ounce of trouble with it. Almost made a Tig welder out of me...
