I need to get a good, mid range, Home Shop, MIG. The three I'm considering are the ESAB Migmaster 215 at $1350, the Lincoln Powermig 216 at $1624, and the Millermatic 212 at $1631. I'm familiar with red and blue, but knew almost nothing about ESAB until I called and talked to a salesman at one of the onlines. He strongly suggested that the ESAB was the best choice, which put me into re-group mode since I was prepared to pull the trigger on the Red one.  So I did some research and Yellow seems to have a very good reputation. They seem to be the "Miller" of Europe.  I'm also very impressed by the ESAB MM 280 at $1875 which seems to rival some of the much more expensive red and blue machines in power and features. The 280 is probably more machine than I need as I tend to weld the big stuff with the trusty Lincoln buzzbox. The 280 is also very heavy at about 350 lbs I think. The two ESAB machines also include a free auto darkening helmet.  So, my questions are - Since I'm now leaning toward ESAB, Is ESAB really this good ? Any regretful ESAB owners ? Any good reason to stay with Red or Blue and avoid Yellow ? Thanks.
Reply:ESAB's are very good machines.  I had an older MM250 for a while.  I also have an ESAB Plasma.   Check out the Thermal arc Fabricator 251.  on of my local LWS has it for $1750 and thats with the full spot stitch option. They are a good brand too. If you are buying from a LWS near you ESAB is a great choice with 100 day no questions asked, money back guaranteeLast edited by soutthpaw; 10-13-2011 at 09:35 PM.Tiger Sales:  AHP Distributor    www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P,  Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma.  For Sale:  Cobra Mig 250 w/ Push-pull gun.  Lincoln Wirematic 250
Reply:I haven't ran a 215 or 280 Migmaster. However, based on what I've seen of the them, I am a little disappointed with the wire drive assembly that ESAB went with on the units. It looks to be a single driven drive roll design; whereas, the Lincoln and Miller are dual driven drive rolls.Along with the current units you are considering, I'd also add Hobart's Ironman 230 to the list.ESAB Migmaster 250 Hobart Ironman 230Multimatic 215TWECO Fabricator 181i & 211iHH125EZ - nice little fluxcore only unitMaxstar 150 STH - very nice
