Rolled some nice straight line beads in a piece of 24 ga steel. Took my time and went slow. To my horror, the newly made piece is now horribly warped and shaped more or less like a bowl.  How do i...A. Fit the piece so its flat again, but with beadsB. Fix what i did wrong so i dont so it againThanks in advance.
Reply:We got no pixs. You say you went straight only. But how many passes and how deep the final result?Normally it is caused by changing direction without annealing or any planishing type work in between passes. Your stretching the metal uneven in different areas.  After various passes, (you do a bit at a time), you inspect the work and if it starts to show warping or deforming, you heat it and basically beat on it a bit or use some type of smoothing. Judgement type thing. The type of bead can influence it, more complicated and stretching in the pattern the more you must compensate. Been a long time since I done any of it but sounds like you didn't do anything other than run beads. Its an art / skill type thing, IIRC usually they use an English wheel periodically to compensate for any deforming during the beading, also heating it to anneal and relieve the stresses. A really skilled guy can beat on it.  Probably better to show a pix, somebody might do a lot of it.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Planishing
Reply:When you roll a bead you are not only stretching the metal but you are also pulling metal from the sides and pushing it up to make the bead. As you pull this metal from next to the bead it causes the panel to warp. What you need to do is to pre stretch the area where the bead will go with an English wheel or by planishing. This stretching will also cause the panel to warp but it should straighten out when you roll the bead (if you do it right).Good luck.JimCut an MGB and widened 11" C4 Corvette suspension and LT1 Chevrolet power & 6 spd.
