Does anyone have drawings for a set of dimple dies? Id like to try to make some, curious of the angle and how much clearance is needed between the dies.
Reply:Here are a couple files for you to look at. The one called dimple die dimensions is coiped from an Excel spreadsheet and if you want the Excel file with the formulas, send me a PM with your email address. The dimensions listed are for pipe size punches and you can get a set really reasonable from Harbor Freight. http://www.harborfreight.com/catalog...ydraulic+punchDimple Die Clearance Math.docDimple Die Dimensions.docI also got the 3" punch for large holes and I set up the dimple dies so they would work with the ram from the set. Here is what the dimpled holes look likeCut an MGB and widened 11" C4 Corvette suspension and LT1 Chevrolet power & 6 spd. Reply:Got it, thank you. This should keep me busy for a while. Im gonna check out the punches also, Ive been using hole saws to cut holes but I see the punches are made for pipe sizes. I really like the punch set up, and to use it with the dimple dies is great. I have a 20 ton press I built, but sometimes you might not be able to get the part into the press. Thanks again
Reply:Sorry to butt  in, but for those of us in the cheap seats, does the die set that bends the lip of the hole fit in the press that punches the hole? And did you make the dimple dies or by them? I have some UFO tables that would be sweet with the dimple holes rather that plain old hole saw ones!ThanksB200amp Air Liquide MIG, Hypertherm Plasma, Harris torches, Optrel helmet, Makita angle grinders, Pre-China Delta chop saw and belt sander, Miller leathers, shop made jigs etc, North- welders backpack.

Reply:Originally Posted by DSWI'm guessing that punch is similar to the wrench ones I've used and the other hydraulic ones I've seen used on the job. There's a threaded rod that extends thru the seat die, thru a hole drilled at the center of where you want to punch the hole, and threads into the cutter portion of the die. When you pump, you actually retract the rod and the base is stopped by the "press". So you pull the cutter thru the material to make the hole. From the pict it looks like his dimple die is set up the same way. After you punch the hole, you remove the punch dies and replace them with the 2 pieces he's made up. When you pump again, the dimple die is pulled into the "seat" that's up against the press forming the dimples shown.
Reply:There really isn't a whole lot of math involved at all. What you need is:1) determine what size (diameter) hole you are going to start with. This will serve as the diameter of the male "guide" portion of the die.2) determine the thickest material you plan to dimple as the space between the male and female must be able to accomodate this.3) machine them. Your angle is roughly 45 degreesI made a few sets one day and they are not that bad to do. Just take a little time but have become very useful when needed. One thing I would suggest is to at least use cold rolled or Chromoly. If you have someone that can heat treat then have them heat treated afterwards. I did not but it has not proven problematic ---YET! ;-)Granthttp://jackalopefab.com/MM210Synchrowave 200DXMiller XMT350 w/60series feederMiller Bobcat 250 with SGA 100 and spoolgunHTP PlasmaFull Machine shop with everything
Reply:jackalope, how thick of material do you form with yours? Im guessing I wouldnt do more than 1/8", so Ill probably make them for that thickness. I will use cold rolled because they wont see a lot of use. The angle will probably be 40-45 degrees. I like the punch set listed above, but would like to find them in regular sizes instead of conduit sizes, by that I mean 1" 1 1/2" etc .... have to look into that more to see if they are available and affordable for hobby use.

Reply:I think he may have been asking about material thickness and die capability. If so, then 1/8" is about max you would ever want to bend on any carbon steel. Aluminum is a bit different, but you get the picture.Granthttp://jackalopefab.com/MM210Synchrowave 200DXMiller XMT350 w/60series feederMiller Bobcat 250 with SGA 100 and spoolgunHTP PlasmaFull Machine shop with everything
