Hey Zap, my argon went bad....

Picked up a new tank of argon yesterday. Today I sit down to lay some practice beads and the first time I strike an arc, it blows a hole through the plate. I figured I must have forgotten to turn on the gas. double check all the gas settings, put in a freshly sharpened tungsten and try again. Same result. Turn up the gas to 20 CFH and replace the tungsten and try a third time. Same result. sparks everywhere, big hole in the plate. Scratching my head, I check the bottle again and notice that the airgas guy gave me C25 by mistake and not pure argon. Needless to say C-25 doesn't work so well with TIG. Guess I am going back to airgas on Friday.  ;-)Miller Multimatic 255

Reply:I've gotten "bad gas" twice from the same supplier.  First tank was likely C5-25.  Made aluminum impossible to weld.  Second gives me crap in the weld on aluminum, but is ok on steel.  Arc sputters. I even did a post on it, thinking my machine was busted. http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php...+with+aluminumMike Heartdoc can confirm this.  I switched tanks right in front of him, and the problem went away instantly.  But I keep touching the electric wire and shocking myself. I still get gas there cause they're very nice and super close. I returned the first bad tank half used and he gave me another for free.
