I need to weld a ball hitch to  plain steel the hitch is either chrome or stainless what should I use MIG OR STICK ONLY
Reply:I'd use stick.... 3/32 or 1/8 7018....Is the nut on the bottom not good enough???Got a pic??Just a couple welders, big hammers, grinders, and torches.Work will free you.Men in dirty jeans built this country, while men in clean suits have destroyed it. Trump/Carson 2016-2024
Reply:I'll be the first to ask...why in the world would you weld the ball on?Without knowing more, my advise is don't.  Unless it's decorative, or art or something.Dave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.

Reply:We seem to judge before we even get all the facts...    FlyingJ,Please get us some pics of the project, as well as some of your welds....~JohnLast edited by AKweldshop; 05-31-2014 at 11:53 PM.Just a couple welders, big hammers, grinders, and torches.Work will free you.Men in dirty jeans built this country, while men in clean suits have destroyed it. Reply:I'm going to weld a 2 5/16" ball to the top of each post on my bed. What should i use to do this?BTW, it's a king size with a pillow top mattress. GravelThe difference between theory and practice is that in theory there is no difference.
Reply:Remove the mattress.

Reply:Not a thing wrong with welding the ball to the hitch.  I wouldn't have it any other way.  The nuts work loose over time, and the ball shaft will wallow out the hole. It's also cheap insurance against things coming loose at a really bad timeKeep in mind that the weld is used in CONJUNCTION WITH THE NUT.  7018And no, you don't ruin the parent metal to the extent that the ball becomes a brittle knob waiting to shatter whilst rolling over rough road"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
