Looking into getting a sheet metal shear/brake/slip roll combo and looking for some input from someone that uses this type of stuff. I never have and don't really know where to start. I really only need the slip roll, but I figured the combo would come in handy more than I even know right now. Looking at this one:http://www.baileighindustrial.com/shears/sbr-3020.phpI don't really have any apprehension about this machine because all of my other baileigh stuff is top notch, but I have absolutely ZERO sheet metal experience. For now, I will just be rolling small radius cones not more than 8"-10" in length, but who knows what I will get into later on; so I thought this might make a good starter machine. What do ya'll think. Are these a good place to start? Are there any better options out there? What should I stay away from? Thanks in advance,
Reply:or maybe this:http://www.knuth-usa.com/produkt,10006.htmlthe baileigh is only $600 i believe
Reply:I have one of the Chinese machines. It's adequate for shearing .060 thick -T6 aluminum, but can only bend or roll short lengths of material that thick. It can bend a full length of .030 material okay, but the rolls are too flexible. If the longest thing you'll roll is 12 inches long, you'll probably be happy with it. Jim

Reply:Where's the Baileigh made? I figured that was China too. I've had good luck with Grizzly machines, most were from Taiwan. Attached ImagesLast edited by Jake98; 10-28-2011 at 09:34 AM.
Reply:that baileigh machine is made in china and your just payingfor the baileigh name and color. HF has one for $399.00 and use there20% coupon and pay less. grizzly has the best customer service.
Reply:Hmm, I didn't know that about Baileigh. I have a couple of their tools and they seem to be much higher quality than the china stuff I own. Although, I have never owned any sheetmetal equipment. I like Grizzly from what I know of them; I have one of their Taiwan 1-1/2HP 10" bench grinders and it is a beast. On the sheetmetal machine, I figured for the same price, the baileigh might be better, but if they are all the same, I guess it doesn't matter much. After some reading, I'm starting to think I may be better off just getting a stand alone slip roll and invest in a shear or brake later on if I still feel the need for it.Anyways, thanks for the help everyone.
Reply:Some of the Baileigh stuff is made in China or whatever, but not all of it. I have heard their big 40'' (I think) 3 in 1 machine is the beefiest 3 in 1 machine available. Anyway,I have an old Dayton 30'' 3 in 1 machine and it works pretty good, it needed to be adjusted a little but works fine now. The brake only brakes at about a 90 deg angle and is not a very sharp bend, the shear works good, but don't try to cut much more than what it is rated for, I use 19-20g steel sheet metal most of the time(rated for 20g), and haven't tried aluminum yet. I paid $200 for mine very lightly used, even still had the oily wax from he factory on it, I think I have got my money's worth.Lincoln pro mig 180Lincoln Square Wave Tig 300/wp 20/home built water cooler Victor, Purox, Harris, O/A welding/cutting setupsVintage Craftsman drill pressVintage Craftsman/Atlas 12"x 36'' lathe7''x 12'' w/c band saw Everlast 140 st |
