I have noticed that if you tighten the wing nut that holds the wire spool all the way, it restricts the movement of the spool. I noticed this while changing wire sizes, you simply tighten the wing nut all the way, and pull the trigger and the spool is restricted, loosen it up and it moves much more freely....design flaw???? anyone know what I mean??

Reply:Wait a second- yer telling me that when you tighten it, it tightens..and when you loosen it, it loosens???sheeite- better get Lincoln on the phone prontoEd Conleyhttp://www.screamingbroccoli.com/MM252MM211 (Sold)Passport Plus & Spool gunLincoln SP135 Plus- (Gone to a good home)Klutch 120v Plasma cutterSO 2020 benderBeer in the fridge
Reply:Let me clarify, I'm talking about the wing nut that holds the spool of wire, not the drive roll tensioner. When you install a spool of wire, and tighten the wing nut there is a good deal of resistance for the spool to turn. If you leave it loose the wire spool turns much more freely.......the manual says to tighten the wing nut??....well?
Reply:Tighten doesn't necessarily mean until you can't turn it any more.  I'll second Sandy's thought to make sure you have a spring under the wing nut.
Reply:There isn't any spring, there is a white plastic spacer that goes on after the spool of wire is installed then the wing nut...anyone else have a 140c know what I'm talking about?
Reply:It's the friction brake design to keep the spool from unraveling and turning into a total bird's nest. You're supposed to tighten the wing nut just enough to keep the spool from unraveling. If you overtighten that wing nut, you don't do any good and just make the drive motor work harder to feed the wire. It's all in the manual.  The best laid schemes ... Gang oft agley ...

Reply:I am using the larger rolls and you can notice the difference when you tighten and loosen the wing nut.  When loose the wire moves effortlessly off the wire spool, when the wing nut is snug, it seems to strain a bit...what's the deal?

Reply:Ok...I think I get it, it's ok to leave the wing nut slightly loose so the wire spool spins freely? I was under the impression I had to snug it tight with my fingers, but when I do this I can hear the drive roll motor labor. When I loosen it, the motor seems to be relieved...

Reply:Nope-sorry but 'leaving it slightly loose'  Isn't how it works. Assuming that the wingnut is setup like the older Lincoln SP series(125.135.175) of mig welders, if you remove the Plastic wing nut inside of the shaft you will find an allen head bolt. Can't recall the size off hand, but the purpose of this allen head bolt is to limit the travel of the wingnut.    The CORRECT way to set up a spool is place the spool on the spindle (wire still locked to spool and NOT set up to feed) put the wing nut in and FULLY tighten it. Turn the spool 360 degrees and there should only be a SLIGHT resistance. If there is none- remove the wing nut- put the allen key in the shaft and turn that Allen screw Inward (clockwise) a small amount- put the wingnut back on the spool- again FULLY TIGHTEN- and turn the spool-if it is still loose repeat procedure until there is some drag and the spool will not freewheel with a slight amount of 'spin' placed on the spool   Conversely, if the spool is too tight when the wingnut is fully tightened, again remove the spool and turn the Allen screw Counter Clockwise until there is just enough tension to give a bit of drag.       That allen screw determines how far in the wingnut will screw in and that(the wingnut) in turn sets how much tension is on the spool with the wingnut fully tightened.  And there 'ain't no spring' in there like there is on Millers/Hobarts.
Reply:Right, you don't want it to turn FREELY.  That was a good writeup for a Lincoln, 131.  That should be in the manual...
Reply:Thanks 131 re I hear what you are saying. However, the new 140c has a wing nut without a male end, in other words, the spool goes onto a threaded shaft and the "open" wing nut is threaded onto the threaded shaft...aside from using washers as spacers to take up the space not sure how else you could adjust it....?

Reply:Ed    Then I stand corrected (won't be the first time) and as I said 'assuming' and you know what they say about 'assume' . That is really a stupid design change then- the old setup while awkward did work-wonder if one could retro fit it?. I even enlarged  the downloaded version of the 140 manual and it appeared to be the same as what they showed for the older SP versions hence my comments-maybe they will be of help to someone with the older machines. Lincolns manuals leave a lot to be desired compared to Miller and Hobart. So hows the arc compare to the Miller and Hobart competive models?
Reply:Only Hobart I have tried was a HH135 and I was just learning. The Passport is sweet but can't compare as I generally run it on 240v- I have run it on 120v and a genset . Both run good. As far as the tension brake on the Lincoln I have not had any problems- just set it and the Drive roll tension and all is good.Only problem I ever had was with the 2lb rolls and Lincoln SUCKS w/o a Spring like the Passport- run 2lb rolls of Fluxcore on both.Ed Conleyhttp://www.screamingbroccoli.com/MM252MM211 (Sold)Passport Plus & Spool gunLincoln SP135 Plus- (Gone to a good home)Klutch 120v Plasma cutterSO 2020 benderBeer in the fridge
