So, I've done very little welding. I spent all the time I had in my friend's shop blacksmithing. He went off to do traveling construction work, and I don't have a shop to work around anymore.I'm signed up for classes for the next year at my local college. It's an introductory to advanced program with multiple types of welding. I'm even going to continue into pipe welding classes. But I'm anxious to get started. Classes start in January, and I don't even know where to start or what to invest my time in. So my question is, do you guys have any idea where I should start sinking my time in? I'm thinking reading, but what direction should I be investing my attention to with reading? Should I get in touch with fab shops in my area and try to get time as a helper? What do you think?Sorry if this seems like a bit of an aimless question. I just feel overwhelmed with directions right now.As a long term goal I want to get damned good at welding, and then do pipework if I can get a job with it.
Reply:Have you read these?I’d buy a welder, rod, some flat bar, and personal gear, then start welding!  Attached ImagesDon’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:I only -just- started getting some good labor work again. I've been itching to buy some equipment, so I will be doing that within the next two weeks probably.I'll start digging into every single one of these books though. Sort of pulling the trigger on 'throwing everything i am into something awesome' finally feels good. Thanks for a spark

Reply:Welcome to the wonderful world of welding! While there are many good books on welding, reading about welding really won't teach you how to weld. Only welding teaches you welding. What I would do is go on Craigslist and find either a Lincoln AC 255 or Hobart Stickmate stick welder. Both show up frequently in the $100 range and are basically bullet proof. Next I would get some 6011 welding rods from Tractor Supply, Home Depot, Lowes, just about any big hardware store. Finally weld stuff together. Any steel you can get your hands will do the point is to get seat time with welding, getting comfortable with the arc, looking at the puddle. As a big plus side once you start your class you have a machine at home to practice on.My "collection":Homemade Stick WelderVictor O/A TorchAC 225Ideal Arc 250HF 90 Amp Flux CoreHF Mig 170Solar 2020 Plasma CutterPower i-Mig 140EHarris O/A torchHF Dual Mig 131140STAlpha Tig 200x
Reply:Welcome ! I would post your location and someone here maybe able to help. Choose wisely !
Reply:Yea! I apologize for not mentioning where I'm at. Spontaneous post wasn't well thought out. I'm in south Florida right now, Palm Beach County. So I'm north of miami almost two hours drive.I'm not staying down here and I'll take the first travel job that sounds legit after welding school. and @Ian, I've only ever seen a Lincoln AC 255 pop up a few times for over 250 around here actually. But I also haven't been watching as hard as I should
Reply:I was in the same boat before my classes started. I started reading some of the books CEP recommended. In my class we have gone through subjects such as metallurgy and print reading. I would second the Metals and How to Weld Them book as well as this one:https://www.jflfoundation.com/Produc...?ProductCode=HAs my instructor suggested, its not a bad thing for anyone getting into welding should have a basic understanding of metallurgy and know how to read blueprints and welding symbols. It certainly wouldn't hurt to have that knowledge.

Reply:Your location probably has something to do with the price. I'm guessing there aren't many farms in southern Florida. Up here every farm has an old AC225 hiding in the tool shed somewhere so the market is kind of flooded with them. For $300 you can get a brand new one with a warranty from Home Depot so I wouldn't pay over $150 for a used one. Keep your eyes peeled and a good deal will pop up when you least expect it.My "collection":Homemade Stick WelderVictor O/A TorchAC 225Ideal Arc 250HF 90 Amp Flux CoreHF Mig 170Solar 2020 Plasma CutterPower i-Mig 140EHarris O/A torchHF Dual Mig 131140STAlpha Tig 200x

Reply:how did you get a name like that in florida?     you sound like you should be making vodka in russia
Reply:Actually, I made good friends with a Russian community down here. That's how I got the nickname "koshka" when I was younger.

Reply:Fab shop is best because it will pay a little. Read as much as you can and ask questions.Arcon Workhorse 300MSPowcon 400SMTPowcon SM400 x 2Powcon SM3001968 SA200 Redface1978 SA250 DieselMiller Super 32P FeederPre 1927 American 14" High Duty LatheK&T Milwaukee 2H Horizontal MillBryan
