Does anyone use E3 tungsten and are they as good or better than throriated electrodes on steel? Are they as good as lanthanated for aluminum? What are your thoughts, my LWS is pushing these over throriated because of the environmental effect. Thanks Steve
Reply:just talked about this in another thread about a week ago. Keep scrolling until you see a thread "new tig rod E3". If you search for "radnor tungsten" you'll probably get some hits as well. 1st on WeldingWeb to have a scrolling sig! Reply:I like them for alum. They ball back very well on their own, and hold shape for half a day or so. 2% lanthanated can go day after day without dressing but takes forever to form that perfect ball it seems, sometimes all day. For steel, nothing seems to work better for me than 2% thoriated. I have tied the E3 on DC, and it seems to be a good second. To differentiate between my DC electrodes and AC electrodes, I point the DC ones on both ends, and use both ends during the day. The AC ones I dress only one end as it will ball back or frost up and I can't swap ends anyway. And I know the balled ones are for AC.Weld like a "WELDOR", not a wel-"DERR" MillerDynasty700DX,Dynasty350DX4ea,Dynasty200DX,Li ncolnSW200-2ea.,MillerMatic350P,MillerMatic200w/spoolgun,MKCobraMig260,Lincoln SP-170T,PlasmaCam/Hypertherm1250,HFProTig2ea,MigMax1ea.

Reply:Interesting video. All though I'm not sure I agree 100% with his conclusion that 2% Lanthanated is best for AC. Based on my personal experience I think 2% Ceriated holds up better at high AC amperages. He was only using 200 amps for that test and the 2% Lanthanated seemed to be close to the max of what it could handle. It would be interesting to see those test run again using 300 amps. My money would be on the 2% Ceriated coming out on top.
Reply:Thanks for that link, that was interesting I just ordered some 3/32nd ceriated and some 3/32 2% lanthanated. I want to try both, I also have E3 to throw in to the mix. Thanks for all the info,Steve
Reply:I used E3 tungstens with scratch start and I have to say i really like them I would get a good bead after stopping and starting a couple times.Lincoln pro core 125 14''chop saw7 inch grinder,2-4.5 inch grinders, electric die grinder.Half inch drillAnd alot of hand tools |
