Wanting to purchase a good 110V Mig that can weld up to 1/4". Main interest is in Hobart 140, Lincoln 140C, and SP-140T. Wanting to stay under $400. PM or reply with pics and price.
Reply:Most manufacturers overrate their small 110v migs.  I hate to burst your bubble, but the best a 110v mig will do is 1/8" under real world conditions. You'll get the most penetration with FC wire, but 1/4" is out of the range of 110v machines..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Hi Bronc, I have a Hobart Handler 120 that will definitely do the work for you.  I use flux core .035 for all my projects and repairs.  It has the gas solenoid for mig and I have drive roll for solid wire as well. Tractor Supply sells a small Hobart for 325.00  Best, Ralph

Reply:So a Hobart 140 will not cut it for 1/4 inch steel eh? What is your suggestion on an entry 220V?
Reply:The Lincolns ... any of them running on 220v like the 175 180 etc are great little welders that can be found on Craigslist all the time for a good price.  I think I paid $399 for mine new in the box from a guy who got it in a garage sale. Understand, I'm not saying the Hobart 140 won't do 1/4" if you prepare the joint by beveling etc, but the 220v welders can get full penetration with none of the hassle.  Check out the Lincoln website for their small 220v mig welders for their recommended welding thicknesses.Last edited by DougAustinTX; 03-17-2011 at 02:17 AM.Miller Syncrowave 350Millermatic 252/ 30A spoolgunMiller Bobcat 225g w/ 3545 spoolgunLincoln PowerArc4000Lincoln 175 Mig  Lincoln 135 Mig Everlast 250EX TigCentury ac/dc 230 amp stickVictor O/AHypertherm 1000 plasma
Reply:Any good name brand 220v mig will do 1/4". For those on a budget, Hobarts are usually the best deal for the money new. You can find some good deals on refurbs at Tool King IIRC. Millers, Lincolns and Essabs are good machines as well.Lots of guys here have opted for the MM211 from Miller. It's a dual voltage machine. On 110v power you have the portability of a small mig, but are limited to 1/8". But you can plug the same machine into 220v power and do up to 3/8". The down side is that it's not inexpensive at close to almost a grand. There have been a ton of threads on The MM211..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size.
