Hello,  I have a broken rod on my Onan engine and I am getting ready to try and pull the engine from the welder.  I took all the panels and the top cover off and it looks like the welding unit will not stand on its own.  It appears it is only supported on the rear and the engine supports the front.   My question is this:  How is the welder connected to the engine?  I can see the shaft joining the two, but can't tell how it is connected.    Any suggestions or guidence would be appreciated.Thank you,  MoHntr
Reply:Tapered press fit shaft into the generator.  Need a special tool to drive out the shaft.  Can't remember the thread where one of the guys did a rebuild.  I think it was on ShopFloorTalk.  Put a different engine on it, cut the crank in two & made a bearing/mount then a Lovejoy to mate the two together.  Pretty slick, but I can't find the link right now.MarkI haven't always been a nurse........Craftsman 12"x36" LatheEnco G-30B MillHobart Handler 175Lincoln WeldandPower 225 AC/DC G-7 CV/CCAdd a Foot Pedal to a Harbor Freight Chicago Electric 165A DC TIG PapaLion's Gate Build
Reply:Mark, I am still researching this, is there a chance I can leave the shaft attached to the rotor?  My plan is just to get the engine to the point I can pull the oil pan and possibly get by with only replacing the rod... providing there is no other damage. It is amazing how well this thing runs on one cylinder.  I didn't even know it wasn't firing on one side until I went to change the plugs and noticed one side was cold and the other was hot. Thanks again,MoHntr
Reply:Go here & download the owner's manual.  Might need to print the pages with the exploded drawings to better see how it all bolts together.http://content.lincolnelectric.com/p...IMS/IM276B.pdfI've searched the forums I go to & cannot find the thread I was talking about.  It shows a drawing of a tool you can use to seperate the rotor from the engine.  Basically it's an all threaded rod that goes down the center of the rotor, screws into the crankshaft.  Then another threaded rod screws over the center rod & pushes the tapered shaft out.All else fails, I think you can pull the brushes & pull the rotor out with it still attached.  Then put it back together in reverse order.MarkI haven't always been a nurse........Craftsman 12"x36" LatheEnco G-30B MillHobart Handler 175Lincoln WeldandPower 225 AC/DC G-7 CV/CCAdd a Foot Pedal to a Harbor Freight Chicago Electric 165A DC TIG PapaLion's Gate Build
Reply:MoHntr, first of all welcome to the forum. As Mark stated, it's a tapered fit and one way that usually works to seperate the rotor from the engine is once the thru bolt is removed, insert a piece of smooth rod thru the rotor and into the crank bolt hole that is long enough to reach the bottom of the crank hole and protrude out of the rotor far enough to give a good sharp rap or two with a decent sized hammer.  A piece of threaded rod with the same thread as the thru bolt works too but make sure the rod is threaded into the crank at least as far as the thru bolt would be to prevent damaging the crank threads.I don't know if the Ranger 8's rotor is set up this way but some rotors have internal threads in the bearing end of the rotor shaft to screw a jack bolt into after inserting the appropriate length rod thru the rotor and into the crank hole (same as you would in the hammer method).  Some of those jack bolt threads are left-hand so if it is threaded pay close attention to that if you go that route.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!

Reply:Naaa, I just couldn't remember the thread that a guy put a Honda engine in place of a Continental on an SA-200.  I think it was on Shop Floor Talk, but can't find it now.MarkI haven't always been a nurse........Craftsman 12"x36" LatheEnco G-30B MillHobart Handler 175Lincoln WeldandPower 225 AC/DC G-7 CV/CCAdd a Foot Pedal to a Harbor Freight Chicago Electric 165A DC TIG PapaLion's Gate Build
Reply:Thanks Duaneb55 and Mark....  I thought I would get a chance to work on this yesterday, but it didn't work out.  Today dosesn't look good either.  I'll let you know how it goes once I attack it.  Thanks again.MoHntr
