last nite i get a call from a friend of a friend requesting i help out these guy's in the city today. i was hesitant till i heard the word cash. so i go out there. a nice bunch of guy's but they didn't have a clue how to fit beams for welding. they didn't have enough money to hire a crane so the iron went up in the freight elevator. many splices. all would've been ok if they at least had a few C clamps and a come along. all they had was a couple steel wedges and a few vise grips. not even a ball of string so it was a long afternoon. on the butt joints only one end of the beams were beveled. the facing beam was square cut. there were a few other welders there but for some reason the inspector never left my side. every time i flipped my shield up he was there. on one beam the root opening on the top flange was hardly big enough to weld with a 1/8" 7018. on the bottom flange the root was 3/4". they did have a great machine though a miller xmt 350 cc/cv. it welded real nice but whoever made up the receptacle for the extension cord messed it up cause the spring loaded cover wouldn't let the plug go in all the way. every once in a while the machine would lose power. btw, that is not me in the pic. Reply:That was a great "Get out of Jail" card for you Doc, I guess its great to be out in the fresh air for a change, Like you did most of my work in done in large buildings, where its impossible to have a large crane lifting beams etc, i had to cut everything less than 10ft and either splice together or weld on site. This is similar to what you did at the Canadian Embassy in London
Reply:Good application of the material lifts, I may have to try that.brad
Reply:Looks like you picked a great day to work outside on the roof. Hope it wasn't too hot. The view looks great. Good job. Maybe the inspector thought you looked familiar... from his last stretch.
