Hi all, my name is zach, im 15 years old. And i just got into welding. Ive always wanted to learn to weld. My grandpa was a pipe welder for Brookhaven labs, on long island New York. He was near the nuclear reactors while working there. So now he has cancer. He just had a surgery this week and he needs his kidney taken out because of tumors. Other than that he is in decent health. So anyways i just got the welding tools this weekend at home depot. Ive got a Lincoln weld pack HD flux core welder. Its a 110v welder, and it will be fine for me and for what I'm doing. So here are a few pics Here is a pic of the first few beads i put down. (Keep in mind, im teaching myself, no lessons, just a lot of research) Pic of welding angle steel to another piece of steel  i will at more pics in the next post...Sent from my iPhone using TapatalkUsing Tapatalk
Reply:Ok so my aunts bday is this weekend and here is a pic of a flower i found on the internet And here is what i made Here is the back (as you can see, way OVER BUILT, thats just the way i do things. And that welding was just to much fun. Lol) And a little stick figure i welded up, (before i wire brushed it) What do you think of my welds? How can i improve? Reply:Welcome and congratulations on the new gear!I'm not qualified to comment on the welds but I can tell you that I've seen worse from guys twice your age.  I'm impressed that you weren't moving way too fast.Your aunt will love the gift!Keep up the good work and creativity!GravelThe difference between theory and practice is that in theory there is no difference.

Reply:Just remember to always drag your gun with flux core.  When you upgrade to mig you can push or pull and it's much cleaner.  Then you'll want tig/stick machine which opens all sorts of fun doors. Also be careful with welding galvanized steel like those nuts and washers as they will make you sick if you don't have good ventilation.   You can always grind it off or use an acid solution to remove it before welding.Keep welding and it'll improve, I'd consult your grandfather as I'm sure he has a ton of knowledge.

Before you start welding make sure there is nothing around that can catch fire or explode like spray paint cans, gas cans... you get the idea.    Your welds will improve the more you weld and educate yourself about welding. Watch tips and tricks and kevin Caron and others on YouTube to gain further understanding of terms, techniques and how to use your equipment properly. Also check out Miller, Lincoln and Esab's websites to gain further knowledge.  Sorry too hear that your grandfather is I'll,  I'll keep him in my prayers. Unexpected setbacks in life are more common than not so always be a decent caring person,  help your grandpa, visit him and tell him you love him often....none us know what's over the horizon.
Reply:A buddy of mine takes old wire wheels and welds them to the center of the flower for a added touch looks great. Have fun.Sent from my SCH-I535 using TapatalkJoe
Reply:Nice Job!Keep planning on going like you are, you better buy another roll of wire now!Its a bummer to run out in a "Creative" moment!Keep practicing!

Reply:If you can get your hands on it, I recommend checking out a video called "Mig Welding Made Easy" by Ron Covell.  I learned how to mig and tig from his videos.  Backed it up with a class from a local junior college.  There is also a group online that rents the videos out for a decent price.
