Loose brass rings on twin-weld hose ?

What are those brass rings(straps?) on my oxy-acetylene torch hose for ?They don't seem to do anything because they just slide  freely on the hose.Seems like they should be crimped to keep the two hoses from being pulled apart.I've seen this on other hoses as well.Miller a/c-d/c Thunderbolt XLMillermatic 180 Purox O/ASmith Littletorch O/AHobart Champion Elite
Reply:That brass ferrule is for crimping down on the twin hose to keep it from continuing to split apart all the way down it's length.   You have to split that hose for a little bit on the working end so you can get it attached to the torch and on the bottle end so you can get it attached to the regulators.   So a foot or two (or three) in from each end you should have one of those brass ferrules crimped down some what tight (not so tight you start closing off the ID of the hose though).   This will keep the hose from continuing to split down it's length.  If you let the hose get split apart further than you need it for attaching to the torch or regulators it just becomes more of a PITA to coil up or keep from snagging on things as you drag it out and around to use.   Usually not a big problem for a hobby welder in his garage that only has a short 10 to 25 foot hose.   But out on a job site (or in a bigger shop) where you've got 50 to 100 (or more) foot of hose you're dragging out, around and over things to get to where you need it it's a little more important.When you buy a new hose they come on there loose so that after you split the hose back to your particular liking / situation you can then crimp them down where you want them.   It's a customizable / personal preference feature to the twin hose assembly.   If you would have ever read the paper work that comes with a new set of twin hose you'd have already known this.Last edited by HT2-4956; 06-28-2014 at 11:17 AM.
