I have a Lincoln SA 200 that I am considering buying.  It has a black face plate, and I was told that it was bought new in the 70's.  The doors are missing, but the welder runs fine, and welds fine. Anyone have a clue what a good starting price is on this machine.  A local farmer has the machine and is going out of business and told me to make him an offer that he didn't know what it was worth.  I don't either so I figured I would ask here and see what you guys think a fair price would be.  The machine is not beat up just missing the doors, and the idle is not working right, but I intend to strip it down and rebuild it from the ground up anyway.  I will try to get some pics tomorrow, and a little more info.  Any advice you can offer is appreciated...I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:Offer him $1,500.00 for it. Look it over good before this offer, but if it  starts, welds, keeps the battery charged and doesn't leak too much oil or smoke like hell, it's worth that or more. If the leads are there, how long are they what kind of shape are they in. (makes it worth more) Does it have a vaccum idler or electric? Is there a grind eze evident if it's vacuum? There are many things to take into account, how bad do you want an SA 200? (I like'em, me!) It's worth the $1,500.00 unless something goes south after you buy it, because just like a used car, you never know. If the farmer is the only and original owner, there is probably low hours, too, unless he's like Samm and will strike an arc just because the sun came up!Only when the last tree has died and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught will we realize we cannot eat money.                                         -Cree Indian ProverbSA 200 LincolnVictor Torches
Reply:For an old workhorse...I'm thinking half of GG's offer, less if it's badly weathered or you can see that the mice have shacked-up in it. I've seen plenty of ‘em in that price range lately.I think I posted links to a few $500 Craigslist machines. There was the $1200 250 diesel, ready to work.Last winter I passed on one for $800, seller put it on Ebay and it ended up around 800.If it's a Derby winner, that changes everything.Good Luck
Reply:Hammack,Consider I bought mine over here in F'gerald for 350 dollars in decent condition.  I have seen a few around for less than 1000.00Esab Migmaster 250Lincoln SA 200Lincoln Ranger 8Smith Oxy Fuel setupEverlast PowerPlasma 80Everlast Power iMIG 160Everlast Power iMIG 205 Everlast Power iMIG 140EEverlast PowerARC 300Everlast PowerARC 140STEverlast PowerTIG 255EXT
Reply:I've got a grand in mine. that''s including purchase price and a hundred dollar bill in fuel round trip to go get it, rebuilding the carb, plugs, wires, filters etc.. just general tuneup from sitting for 3 plus years. i seen a 200D with the lil 3cylinder perkins list locally for 8 bills a few weeks back. So in my opinion, i wouldn't offer 1500 unless I just really wanted it.Last edited by BNF; 05-02-2009 at 02:30 PM.Hillbilly Fabworks
Reply:OK, I found out a bit more on the machine today, and got some pics.  It's in a little rougher shape than I originally thought, but it will run and weld.  That is all I know right now.  I talked to the owners today, and they said that it had not run for a while, and they just had a local mechanic work on it and get it running.  The guys are retiring from farming, and when I asked about it today they told me to look it over and just make them an offer.  I'm not trying to beat them out of anything, just trying to come up with a fair price for both of us.  I am gonna put a battery in it tomorrow and crank it up and see HOW it runs, and welds, and if the idler, etc... work.  here are the pics.  Any suggestions on what it is worth is greatly appreciated.  I am assuming that the toggle switches on the lower left of the pic are what was added to crank and run the welder.  Also the lights were just welded to the frame..I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:The sheet metal will need some work, and some of the crap welded to it will have to be cut off, but I can use the axles on the new running gear I plan to build.  Where the frame was welded to the running gear.I also found out that it is a red face not a black, and it was made in '67 according to the serial number.  It's rough, but I want it for a project to rebuild anyway.  I've pretty much told them I would take it.  I just need to figure out what it's worth.  Thanks for the help guys.I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:Being a Redface makes it something to desire, in my opinion. Looking at the relative shape it's in, rough, though for it's age not that bad. Green definately cuts the price down, too. The leads are included, it's on a tandem axle trailer, with a tough enough suspension to add to it, (bottles, boxes etc.) and looking at the prevalent oil leaks and general mechanicals, seems like a buy to me. Make an offer of $7 to $800.00 and go from there.I understand what these guys are saying, you can get good buys if you look. I would NOT sell a Redface (in this shape) for less than $2500.00, and my Blackface won't go for less than $3000.00. The difference is I know what they are. Most folks aren't aware there is a difference between Redface, Blackface etc. This is a machine worth having, especially if your going to make it a project, you will have something real to start with. Go for it. There 's a reason people talk about the Redface like they do. Only when the last tree has died and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught will we realize we cannot eat money.                                         -Cree Indian ProverbSA 200 LincolnVictor Torches
