I'm wondering which I should try to get. I feel more comfortable with 6g tig, but is stick more commonly used on pipe?
Reply:Depends. Stainless pipe is more commonly welded with tig. Outdoor pipe or carbon steel pipe, stick.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720
Reply:Ok, the shop I'm taking the test at only has carbon steel. I think I'll take it using tig because I'm confident I can pass it, then try for stick.
Reply:Depends on pipe size too, I don't see too much 2" 6010 root. They either do tig root 7018 fill, tig root and hot pass then fill 7018, or tig all the way. If it's 6" it can be any of those including 6010 root.Miller Maxstar 200 SDPiperliner #10 Gold
Reply:I was looking in one AWS book for pipe testing, and it looks like there are no tests specified for just GTAW on carbon steel pipe, however they do have one on stainless. Most of them are all SMAW, or GTAW root then 7018.
Reply:I'm pretty sure the shop people will tell you what they want. All of our 2 inch and below pipe is 100% TIG. We don't weld anything with stick, the bigger stuff is DualShield or sub arc fill and cap.Last edited by TimmyTIG; 07-06-2014 at 10:21 PM.
