hi everybody hope yall can help. the machine is around a 58 or 59 lincoln sa 200 i just bought. i put a new carb on and it will crank and idle fine. but when you start welding it starts backfiring and bogs down. i have checked the points and cap and rotor and they look fine . and when you shut it down it make's a ticking noise from the magneto. does anybody elses machine do this . any help would be appreciatedLast edited by shovelhead; 04-18-2009 at 10:41 PM.

Reply:ya the carb was overflowing and was gummed up. the guy i bought it from got for a spare machine. he got it from a farmer that said it had been gone through about 8 years ago and only been ran about 100 hours since then. Its real clean and everything from what i can tell is in decent working order. IF you lock the idle in high possition its fine if only does it when you load the motor.Last edited by shovelhead; 04-19-2009 at 09:38 AM.
Reply:Sounds to me like the same thing I would expect with a Harley engine and you are familiar with those.  Twist the t*t and it bogs then you have to either adjust the idle speed up or play with the high speed setting to find the sweet spot.  Assuming you have a clean air filter I would think you have to adjust the carb since it might have changed settings when taken off an cleaned out.The ticking noise is not familiar to me.  Mine doesn't do that.Gordie -- "I believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant."
Reply:yes sir i thought the same thing but the carb is brand new from stumps welding. the main jet is fixed theirs know adjustment to it. the ticking im hearing is from the impulse mechanism in the magneto for hand cranking . when you hear it ticking that lets you know its working. I took the valve cover off and its full of rust and trash. Im going to go ahead and break it down and get it hot tanked and go from there.
Reply:hmmm, I'd guess the govoner isn't adjusted properly
Reply:a rig welder told me today that when his machine starts to do this when it need a tune up. he said to change the condensor and points .he said the condensor is breaking down under a load.

Reply:Condensers typically either work properly, fail open or fail shorted.Failed open = erratic spark and pitted points that will eventually result in 'welded' contacts.Failed shorted = engine won't run at all as the points are continuously grounded through the shorted condenser.Have you checked for bad plug wires that are 'cross-firing' when the engine is loaded?  Running the plug wires in a bundle as they typically are on those Continentals sets the stage for easy cross-firing when the plug wires get some age on them.Plugs that have been fouled (in the case of flooding due to the carb "overflowing") can result in a skipping under load condition as the carbon build up on the plug electrode can create an electrical path to ground for the spark to the carbon coated insulator.Plugs require more voltage to fire under a load than at idle (in fact more under a partial rather than full load) which ineither case - bad wires or foulded plugs - could result in your described engine performance if it's not fuel related. If everything else is good on that carburetor (clean air/fuel bleed passages and such) an improperly adjusted float level may explain what you're experiencing as well.  Too low a setting would result in a lean condition, too high resulting in a rich condition due to excessive fuel pull-over in the high speed circuit.  However, that usually shows up at higher speeds regardless of load whereas inadequate fuel supply due to too low a float setting can under a load but not a no-load high speed.Just thinking out loud.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!
Reply:Just found another reason only today.  My log splitter would start and run at adle but when brought up to speed would falter and die in short order.  My wife said it sounded like it ran out of gas.- tank full.- cleaned out the float bowl and the sediment bowl with cue-tips.  old gas turned to green tar.- fired it up and ran fine for only a short while and then died again.- took the line off from the sediment bowl to the carb and turned on the gas and ???where was the gas?- took the line off from the tank to the shut off valve and ???  tried to blow back through the line to the tank and ???This ethanol crapola they sell for gas has turned the inside of the fuel lines into liquid rubber snot that clogged the line so that the engine would run out of gas.  My wife was right New lines and all is well.  Now the engine no longer "hunts" for its running speed so now I know what THAT problem was too.Gordie -- "I believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant."
Reply:I appreciat the help .I also thoat that condesors ether work or they dont. the plug wire do look a little old but the insulation on them look good. ether way im going to replace everything from points to plugs and try again. if it dont work then it has to be the carburetor .
