My project is to make 2 motorcycle mirrors out of 1/8" sheets of 6061 aluminium. There is a backing plate and a face frame frame. I plan to mill 1/16" off of each and use 1/8" glass sandwiched in between.I will mill a block to attach to the back of the mirror and thread it for 3/8" rod to mount to a clamp on the handle bars.I plan to fly cut and polish and then engrave on the mirror. My question is about the aluminium rod with flux, just need a little propane torch to weld with, how strong are these welds? The mirrors have a little heft to them, would the weld hold up over time? What kind of finish/polish would I expect from it?Now I plan to mount the block with screws from the backside. But I would also weld them, just to keep them from vibrating loose over time.I also have enough aluminium in the scrap pile, could start on the head light and tail light. I will need to weld several mounting tabs etc inside the housing that would be hidden. Is that a better use of the rod? or is it just to weak to mess with?just curious what others think of brazing the aluminium that has tried it before. Thanks in advance.
Reply:Unfortunately aluminum brazing doesn't have much strength to it. It's mainly designed for fixing aluminum boat leaks. Here's a video of someone testing aluminum brazed joints. My "collection":Homemade Stick WelderVictor O/A TorchAC 225Ideal Arc 250HF 90 Amp Flux CoreHF Mig 170Solar 2020 Plasma CutterPower i-Mig 140EHarris O/A torchHF Dual Mig 131140STAlpha Tig 200x
Reply:Thanks for the video link, I did google and watched many vids on the actual braising, one guy was repairing some axle housing, his welds looked good, but had my doubt it would last.Anyways I was not finding one on strength and using wrong search terms.GRRRR! I will just have to wait until time comes can purchase the welder.I can still do a lot of prep work I guess.Stuck at home disabled and waiting on social security, but can still play around a few min a day a few days a week.
Reply:Check out some of the TinmanTech stuff. they make some slick products for gas welding and brazing aluminum. I also have an older ALCOA book on brazing alu, ill dig it out.Miller Big 40GMiller HF-251 D High FreqVictor OA Lincoln 135 MigMK 3A CobramaticBridgeport J HeadCronatron OxylanceRadnor ACAG TorchWeldcraft TIG Torches1 blown knee and two 5 Gallon pails away from being a hero.
