Ok I have been arranging my shop and would like some help on a few issues. It's a weird lay out 40'x60' barn. the top is used for storing trailers and stuff not needed but don't get rid of. Bottom is a bunch of rooms. My main shop part is 20'x30'. I need ideas for tool storage like clamps grinders and drill bits, filler wire, smaw/gtaw/gmaw. The whole nine yards. I have tool boxes, vidmars, cabinets, metal lockers ect. Just want some input. I inherited most of this from my father he never threw out anything. I've been going thro the obvious stuff. I want to know how you guys set up your stations. Like drill press bits and tap and die. Clamps. grinders. Filler metal so much work!!!
Reply:Pictures help. I keep my power to the back wall. Hand tools toward the front. Shelves in one side, tool chests on the other.Regards,RobGreat Basin WeldingInstagramBlue weldersRed weldersMy luscious Table DIY TIG Torch cooler
Reply:Gavo - Keep everything your father left you . . .I can visualize: A classic-Northern/mid-West barn design.Does your sub-basement shop have a concrete floor? You don't want to torch you heritage . . .How high is the ceiling? What is your electrical service?Do you have power tools that have handed/directional feed?Is the approach to your shop, and doors: clock-wise or counter clock-wise?Are you right or left handed; and is natural light available?Just some considerations that eventually surface.Opus

Reply:Really hard to see anything because I've been really busy working on it. I clear up space and take out more! Wood floor but I put heave plastic on walls and ceiling. I do mostly tig work and do all my cutting and grinding outside. To avoid fire and dust in shop. Working on a bandsaw.

Reply:I like the stone walls. All the clutter does not faze me. Thats what my space looked like before I started clearing out so I can see right through it --- and I think it's got potential. You've already got air duct plumbed. Also looks like you've already got some good overhead lighting too. That's pretty cool in my book and a good leg up on where I started.I don't know where your electrical service comes in, but I would factor the location of your nearest electrical panel in to decisions on where to locate machines. If it was me, I would locate my big machines along the wall under and to the left of your air hose real (the bare wall) and have electrical conduit running up and along that same wall providing power to your big machines. Surely with that much space a couple big pieces of iron are in your future? I would put regular work benches along side the stone wall with the windows so I could sit down and work in really nice natural light when time permitted.
Reply:Start to group things. Then think of storage. my shop still looks worse at times. Get in the mindset that everything needs a place to live. Clean up the tools and or refurbish them your dad's tools of they're not worth anything to you might be to someone else. It's a tough call between sentiment and actual value. You'll have to make that choice. Find someone who you trust and has some knowledge to help you value the things you think you might want to get rid of and get to it. Good luck! Reply:really hard to show lay out 4 rooms and bathroom. I have electric ran from house but working getting a separate meter. I have one 220 plug to left of hose wheel between my table and welders.
Reply:First off, a big, well-intentioned, kind-spirited ... You Suck! I already thought it was great but the last set of pictures adds to it. I love the shot with the drawer cabinets with the stone and wood floor with the rough wood beams overhead. Good luck, it should be a great work space.Have you experimented with or tried using Google Sketchup? I think it would be perfect for exploring different layouts. Just like you were saying it's hard to show layout with 2D pictures. If you mock-up the space with Google Sketchup you could post views that show "the big picture" using isometric views with transparent/hidden walls/etc as necessary. That being said, plain and simple pencil and paper rough sketched floor plans would probably work just as well.
Reply:Barn is 1876 I believe guys lived here before us kept it in excellent shap. Those vidmars my dad faught like hell to get when his work was selling them off to relocate. I'll check out that google sketch

Reply:Yes sir a little cleaning and organization and you have a great shop. I really like those old cabinets. Good luck
Reply:GavoYour shop is going to take a while to design.Until then: could you show us some photos of the barn. Opus
Reply:When it comes to storage think of your shop as real estate....there's high value and low value. Store the stuff you seldom use up high and in the hard to get to areas. The band around the wall at the 3-5' level is your high value area for every day stuff. Use space, not just area, eg. if you have 5 shovels don't hang each one on a seperate hook, hang them all on 1 longer hook. My tools seldom leave the shop so peg boards work well for me. Good luck with it.If you don't want to stand behind our Troops, feel free to stand in front of them.
Reply:Great advice guys keep it coming and thanks. I can get some pics of barn but not till weekend. Been working 12's making that coin to invest in shop!! I would like to make a drill bit index or box with it lable for size and mount on wall. Keep extra bits in vidmars with tap and die. Has any one made there own drill bit wall mount?

Reply:Yes that's some what I was looking for!
Reply:Do you own the shop? If so, I'd clear the whole thing out, get rid of the hanging plastic that could catch fire, finish any wall that isn't stone or concrete with Sheetrock, paint it all white or a light color with a paint that can be cleaned if needed, and then I'd put an epoxy paint or similar paint on the wood floor to make cleanup easier. After that run conduit if you weren't able to put it in the stud walls.
Reply:Sheet rock behind the flame retardant plastic. There is paint on wood flood haven't had any burn marks even from glowing red drop cuts like small angle edges. The guy who owned before us welded and metal fabricated in there. All wiring is in wall.
Reply:OLD school shop ! No wimps allowed !I see your old man smashedNcanned that P.O.S. cover on his Cman bandsaw too.The only change I would make is a pickup full of new iron and a scribble of something to build.Everyone knows the best "blueprints" are drawn on cardboard that held 24 beers.Funny. I haven't smoked//edit//cigarettes in a few years and that shop made me reach to my shirt pocket. Reply:make sure you don't block the frig and keep the big screen tv away from grinding and welding ,it's better to do that sort of stuff out side so it doesn't clutter up the mancave , I mean shop
Reply:Wow what a nice set up. I am very proud for you on the space you going have when you get it figured out. Great looking barn. I covet your cabinets that your dad saved. Good luck |
