Reply:Torch them into 2' long pieces, put them on CL or here with a price and get ready to sell them all.At very least to local buyers. The track is quite desirable to metal working guys for anvils tho, as was said several times above Expert Garage Hack....https://www.facebook.com/steven.webber.948

Reply:Go over to Iforgeiron and post up a sale add for 2' or 3' chunks of that rail. I know there are a couple of guys in the area over there who might be interested if they haven't managed to find an anvil yet..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Whatever you do, don't make one into an anvil. It's a horrible addiction. I've made 4 already and 3 more are staring me in the face! Run! I wouldn't make any cuts until I had an order. 2 and 3 ft pieces are too short for a good upright anvil. How tall is the profile on that rail? Oh no...it's starting again....Last edited by whtbaron; 11-23-2015 at 09:22 PM.250 amp Miller DialArc AC/DC StickF-225 amp Forney AC Stick230 amp Sears AC StickLincoln 180C MIGVictor Medalist 350 O/ACut 50 PlasmaLes

Reply:Our scrap yard won't accept rail road steel.  I assume it has to do with proving ownership or permission to possess.   I used to live near tracks,  the RR would would drop of parts months before performing work,  it was illegal to take the items from their property.

Oh no...it's starting again....That's a nice size for anvils. I also like the drag idea if you have a dirt driveway. I was going to make one in a reverse V with an open center to build the grade back up in the middle of the road. Reply:You say 70, DSW says 75, so lets just err on the side of caution and say 70. At 115 lbs/yd, that's just over 3 lbs/in (3.194). That "should" get 21" of rail in the flat rate box if there isn't a heavy coating of rust or something on it. That's a good size if not a little more than you need for a good horizontal anvil, but not near enough for a post anvil. My light rail post anvil was around 100 lbs.250 amp Miller DialArc AC/DC StickF-225 amp Forney AC Stick230 amp Sears AC StickLincoln 180C MIGVictor Medalist 350 O/ACut 50 PlasmaLes

If the steel is not tucked in tight so not to move....And is not triple wrapped in heavy duty tape, it will bust out of that box in a NY minute. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I have a friend who is a BNSF yard master and he informed me of this. My knowledge is based upon what he told me.Not to try to incriminate you Phil for how you came into possession of them, just to answer the question.  I know people all over who have stuff made from rr stuff and the rr don't seem to care all that much.
Reply:WHat is your regular outside temp?cause of the brittle nature of this type of steel, you can make a small cut in the head (1/2" deep), position the rail so that it is cantilevered around the position of the cut, and hammer the end off.The colder it is, the easier this works.
Reply:Where I store processed gravel for future use I like one buried at centerline of the bucket. I can repeatedly scoop, rubbing the rail. It's cheaper, easier, and easier on the bottom of the bucket than a concrete floor.Refilling a ditch, it's a straightedge to run the backhoe bucket along. A pad eye on the end allows me to pull it along the ditch as I work. It speeds the finishing process. When leveling a patio, or new driveway, or prepping a base for a concrete slab, two set flush and level with a third laid across them assures a perfect flat surface. The whole job can be done without touching a hand shovel or rake. The town office vault ceiling is rail with plywood between, then poured concrete.A driveway drag.I know three railroad buffs with cabooses sitting on them An office, a camp, and a child's playhouse. An optimist is usually wrong, and when the unexpected happens is unprepared. A pessimist is usually right, when wrong, is delighted, and well prepared.
