Get out the popcorn guys/gals. A guy on youtube is welding up a highway use trailer with what I think is a 110 volt mig welder. Am I right? Is it 110 volt and should he be building this trailer? I tried to embed the video and it's not working and when I put the url on the forum is doesn't work either. Take out the spaces in the url and take a look at the video at youtube. Isn't that a 110 volt mig welder he's using to weld this highway use trailer?youtube.com / watch ?   v = G t i T S9 T R d R E---------------------------edit:Since the forum is filtering out that naughty word in that url making it impossible to view the video for some people.I posted the video in a thread on my scrap metal forum.http://scrapmetaltalk.com/showthread.php?tid=1972The video is embedded in the thread at the link above for anyone who wants to see the video without removing the spaces to the url.Last edited by Chad22; 09-19-2014 at 11:46 PM.
Reply:It might be the cheapest 110 volt POS ever made, looks like to me like HF junk, but it should weld that bed frame metal together just fine.I use my 110 volt mig all the time on trailers, but I also use 7018 burned with my 230 amp DC craftsman where needed.old Miller spectrum 625 Lincoln SP-135 T, CO2+0.025 wireMiller model 250 and WP-18V torchCraftsman 100amp AC/DC and WP-17V torchCentury 115-004 HF arc stabilizerHome made 4 transformer spot welderHome made alternator welder

Reply:Cheap  4 setting 110v mig on what looks like 100' of extension cord... can you say cold welds anyone?I wasn't real impressed with anything I saw there, so I don't hold high hopes for any of his welds. Of course it's youtube and anyone can be a self proclaimed "expert" there. Maybe we're lucky and he stayed at a Holiday Inn last night....No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:This is nothing  I read a post on another site  a guy was moving a Bridgeport milling  machine  from like two states away from his house .He built his trailer from" 2x6 lumber "held together with "lag bolts".  If I could find the post I would link it . towed it with a rabbit or civic  or some such POS. gxbxc

Reply:I built a 24 foot stake side trailer about 10 years ago for a friend of mine with a cheap Italian made 110 mig bought from Costco. It hauled all of his belongings from northern California to Alaska and back on the Alaskan highway and it held up great. I think if you know the limitations of the welder, you can compensate for it with technique. I knew I could only weld so long before I had to let the welder cool off and had to do a bit more prep before hand. It took a lot longer then it would have if I would have had a 220 mig, but I got it done. I think the Alaskan highway should be a pretty good test, don't you?
Reply:I'm sure it will work fine. Its not like commercially made trailers are much better, in that particular size range at least. Its sad because a small AC stick welder would produce a much higer quality weld IMHO. But we all have out limits.Syncrowave 350Coolmate 3Millermatic 251Spoolmatic 30A
Reply:wow, thats one bright guy, his folks must be proud. maybe the worldwill get lucky and his always hot contraption will fry him before his gonna be lethal trailer hits the road. clint eastwood said , in high plains drifter i think, "a mans gotta know his limitations". this guy is still figuring his out.........MLM
Reply:I like how in the beginning he says his machine keeps shutting down while hes welding because its so hot outside... Has nothing to do with the 10 second duty cycle.

Reply:Maybe this is what he is going to haul on the trailer?Anyone know what this "thing" is, it is only two wheel drive, so not good for off road use. Kind of a weird looking Go Cart..... maybe built to use in parades, or something?  Originally Posted by hddnisHe builds more than trailers.Mr. HEHEY!In the early part of the video, he states that his stereo doesn't work because he keeps tripping the breaker on his "Power-Strip".He admits in the end, you are watching an Idiot build a trailer, after all its not Youtube, not Hollywood!

Reply:Here's what my first stick welder looked like. Exactly like it and it's what I used to weld up my first trailer that failed on the highway. Seriously it was the worst welder I bought. The thing would only go for about 5 seconds before getting to hot and shut off. The wires inside even melted. And I had to jury rig the switch with two household light switches to make it work.I finally scrapped this pos out. I would never weld on another trailer with one of these welders. Or any other 110 volt welder for that matter. There was never enough amperage coming out of that thing to keep the rod from sticking. I learned my lesson about using the correct equipment for the job and to get some practice in before welding something critical. When I bought my lincoln 220 volt 180 amp stick welder from a guy on craigslist it made a world of difference. Not one rod stuck like they did with my crap welder. And I paid about the same amount of money for that better welder than the pos welder. If you have one of the above welders like shown in the pic. Don't even attempt to make a trailer with it as I've had personal experience with a trailer failing from welding it up with one of those welders.

Reply:They build bridges that take heavy trucks out of wood. Most homes and light commercial buildings are frequently made of wood. They make plylam and laminated lumber as well as trusses that can often exceed the strength of  smaller steel members.Biggest issue with wood is that some fasteners like nails, don't hold up well to repeated vibration and flexing . Nuts and bolts, threaded connectors like screws and lags, glue connections all usually hold better than the wood itself, and it doesn't take a rocket scientist to install them. I'd rather see a trailer like the one in the video assembled with nuts and bolts vs a cheap 110v welder. With nuts and bolts you know you have at least a minimum strength value. With a poor weld you really have no idea of its strength. The issue of nuts backing off could be solved with any number of easy solutions. Red locktite would guarantee the nuts and bolts would stay together and wouldn't require any extra expertise to install..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Yes any steel trailer built with grade 5 or 8 fasteners would be better than poorly welded ones ,if they were bolted in the right places ( after all  most trailer axles are held on with only 4 bolts ). Houses and bridges are made of wood but when they get moved by earth quakes or tornado's they fall down. We stopped using wood in motor vehicles in the early 50's because it just wouldn't hold up to modern rigors. If i was building something like that for around the yard or farm great , but he even said the steel fenders fell off on 495 so he put wood one on.Last edited by gxbxc; 09-20-2014 at 01:22 PM.
Reply:The point being is that wood is a perfectly sound structural material. I left out boats/ships earlier. they take a lot of movement and vibration under certain circumstances and hold up quite well.I'm not advocating using wood for trailers, only that if used properly there's no reason it can't work. It's the "used properly" part that brings us back to the original subject. In most cases small welders aren't used properly. The users would most likely have gotten better, more reliable results, with mechanical fasteners like bolts..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:yes bridges fall,, boats sink , It is the used within design limits that govern the material usage  and designed strengths  of a building media.

Reply:Well hell I passed one of those the other day it was a tear drop trailer " steel chassis" wood and aluminum skin. He could have made a steel frame trailer and put a wooden deck on it , if he had wanted to take the extra time to do it  and he could have bolted it together so he could take it  apart to store it. It would have worked out fine if he was on the walking dead or some other post apocalypse story, where he was rebuilding from the ruins .
Reply:COOL ! I like the red plastic fuel container sitting there. I wonder if he made a finished video ?
Reply:I'd say with proper care and maintenance wood holds up a lot better than people give it credit for.

Reply:I love how all mig welders fall in only two classes: 110v and 220v. All 110v are junk and wont weld 1/8 inch and all 220v are awesome and will weld 2 inch. The amperage rating means nothing, its all about the supply voltage.
Reply:The Spruce goose was made from spruce wood. My thought on wood for aircraft would be Birch wood because of its stability or youngs modulus. As far as the guys trailer  video: entertaining.
Reply:So you really cant believe everything you read (spruce s/b birch goose?). Thanks for schooling me.
