I built this for some friends in Manhattan. They manage the building there. They needed something lightweight, small and exactly the right size to pull a sump pump out of a metal tank, that had very low hung piping above it. I built it in one night. Mostly from parts from Homedepot. The rolled "U" channel was a piece my friend had at his shop already made up and welded, it was a test piece. The winch was actually on the back of a welding cart we were getting rid of. We weld or bolt on an eyelet, to a cap for an argon cylinder, so we can winch it up, swing it over and put it in place. Especially when you cannot pull the machine out it is nice to be able to do that. When this mini crane is broken down you can take it on a train and subway with ease. That is how I got them there. They work really well and get the sump pumps in and out, and cleaned of debris, quickly. Rather inexpensive as well. You can unbolt the part that holds the winch and turn it over to change the height of the boom as well. They used to do it with ladders and boards, it was a pain and rather dangerous.                       Sincerely,                            William McCormickLast edited by William McCormick; 09-21-2014 at 12:55 PM.
Reply:You can also just flip the ring and screw the legs in the other side of the coupling, and then reverse the boom to raise or lower the boom height.                       Sincerely,                            William McCormick
Reply:ingenus design  . looks like you nailed it  what size pipe was the boom made from and how did you bend it.gxbxc.
Reply:Nice work, we made something similar not too long ago for lifting sump pumps out of lift stations. The base had to be wide enough to fit over the hole (3' across I think) and still be easily portable. Ours is a tripod that the legs screw into the top to hold it together.Airco Ac/Dc 300 HeliwelderMillerMatic 200 (stolen)Miller Maxstar 150STLMiller AEAD200LE (welding and generating power) Hobart MIG
Reply:Thanks. The boom is 1" pipe. The legs are 3/4" pipe. All four legs touch down under pressure. That is the cool thing about the ring it distributes the weight around. They also have two in the ground sump pumps, that are easy to get to. But the sump in the above ground tank was just crazy to work on. This just fits under the pipes and actually the boom goes between the pipes, and lifts the pump out.                       Sincerely,                            William McCormick
Reply:I bent the pipe on a Parker Hannifin hydraulic bender. But you can just use a hand operated pipe bender for rigid pipe. Like electricians use. We do it all the time.                       Sincerely,                            William McCormick
Reply:Thanks for the idea and good job on your project.  I am on the water and sewer board here and may pass your idea on to our general manage.
Reply:Nice work!I'm having a hard time imagining being a contractor or tradesperson in a big city, and having to haul my tools and equipment around on a subway...!
Reply:If there is a lot of equipment I will pull a truck up behind baracades to load a building. But if there is just one or two tools it is often easier to just take the train and subway. This way you do not have to find a place to park the truck.                         Sincerely,                                  William McCormick
