I have only ever stick welded at my current job. Mostly loading dock stuff.Most/all guys in the shop run 1/8" 7018. 7018 is all I have ever run, 3/32, 1/8 and 5/32. Usually Lincoln brand. My welder is a miller blue star 145, and I really have no complaints about 7018. I get good results, passable uphill results and "haven't had one break yet" overhead. There are two boxes of 6011, 1/8" sitting in the shop. Are there any advantages? What kind of amp settings?(figure 1/4-3/8 thicknesses)
Reply:90-110amps.You got AC on that machine??
Reply:6010/6011 has more penetration. Needs less power than 7018.GravelThe difference between theory and practice is that in theory there is no difference.
Reply:DC only, 145 amps max.
Reply:90-110amps all position....btw,What's wrong with 7018?Unless you've got lots of rust and gaps, I'd stick to your 3/32 and 1/8 7018.JMHO,~John
Reply:Nothings wrong with it. It works for everything I need to do, even some decent gaps.I am just curious how 6011 compares.I could burn a hand full on my own time, but don't know if its even worth it.
Reply:Maybe this video will help show a little - it's quite different than 7018.http://welding-tv.com/stick-skill-dr...e-technique-2/Dave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.
Reply:My slightly better than average 7018 weld.1/4" thick.
Reply:Maybe hang just a tick at the end of your weld to let the puddle fill a bit, otherwise your weld looks ok to me.
Reply:the 7018 looks pretty good.... I would grab that 6011 and run it on DC. I watched that video that Dave posted of Jody running 6010. I have run that rod for years, but is always good to watch and learn. For a few of my repair jobs I grind and prep the weld joint then 6011 root and 7018 cap. would do 6010 root but I only have my 1940's AC machine..Good luck and have fun! Reply:6011 is good for poor fit up, hellacious gaps. You can weld over rust and paint with more sucsess, but the weld is not as pretty.Constant Current Weldor.
Reply:I've seen some very pretty 6010/6011 welds. Serious stack of dimes work. It's a different look than 7018, though.Lincoln 175HD
Reply:Well, I spent 6 hours swapping all my crap over to a brand new work truck (last truck:176xxx miles, new truck: 580 miles from the drive up from Los Angeles.)Remembered the 6011 I saw in the shop, so grabbed the box of 1/8". Its Radnor brand, but whatever.Gonna play with it when I have down time.
