My young son is getting more interested in deer hunting - and I'm getting older - so heated deer stands are nice (but I say it's for him - lol).I got a big run down fishhouse for free - cut in 4 windows to shoot out of and made this wood stove out of scrap. It will also get used this ice fishing season The "customer" with his hot-coco and book to read. The stove - notice I put a radius on the door opening so it won't crack at the corners. The three 1/2" holes are for air - the bolts on the floor get slid in to adjust the heat.Firebox is 9" wide x 12" deep x 11" tall. 3" flue.Welds look terrible in this pic, must have been screwing around that night. The torch tip fits in the hole for starting the fire.Needed a thimble to protect the exit hole, used a 3" flue pipe in an icecream pail and poured quikrete. That's it - all from scrap and done quick and dirty the evening before deer opener - oops Fire box is approx 1/8" thick and heats well.Burns a lumber scrap about the size of my hand every 20min or so.Dave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.

Reply:Pipe would have been quicker with a lot less welding but that one looks darn good.

Reply:nice work for a quickie job. now that the pressure of opening day is over you may want to tack some thicker plate to the outside of the fire-box. 1/8th plate won't hold the heat from the fire too long. i bet that venison tasted real good!!i.u.o.e. # 15queens, ny and sunny fla
Reply:Neat stove.   richey
Reply:Looks perfect for the job. Needs a coffee pot on top. "The things that will destroy America are prosperity at any price, peace at any price, safety first instead of duty first, the love of soft living and the get rich quick theory of life." -Theodore Roosevelt
Reply:Good times, hunting and fishing with your kids.  Enjoy every minute, they grow up so fast now days.  Nice job on the stove too.
Reply:Simply elegant sir! Only change I'd make would be to maybe add a "slide-over" adjustable air hole cover. Reply:The stove looks good for a quick and dirty job, but tell your "customer" if he is serious about bagging a deer to ditch the book. You can't be watching for a deer to shoot if your eyes are on the book. A nice one could walk right past and never be seen if he is reading, gotta be watching for them at all times, never know when they are going to show up.
Reply:Nice job!Sitting in my open stand yesterday all day long in 10 degree weather with the wind blowing a constant 10-20 had me thinking of all these guys sitting in closed stands with heaters.

Reply:Man you all do it alot different than we do it out west.... It seems like I put 300 mile's on my boots every elk season, tried a stand once Open stand and it sucked! But on topic...Nice stove man! (warm is nice sometimes when hunting...lol especially after truding through fresh snow tracking an elk during final cow season). And I can understand the enclosed to be able to glean interest from a child It is always fun to be able to have them along doing things you enjoy.Millermatic 30aMillermatic 210Miller thunderbolt 225 ac/dc/ccMiller HF15-1-wg tigLincoln ranger 10(honda powered)Cebora 175 mig Too damn many tools but oddly not enough......

Reply:Originally Posted by MinnesotaDaveYeah, that sucks sometimes - but I like an open stand so I can hear.  But if I "have" to use a heated stand so my kid enjoys the outing, I guess I can give up my open stand for heat, coffee and a comfy chair...Being a dad is rough My younger brother (melonhead on WW) had his little girl in his heated 6x6 this year. He has more cash so his is insulated, vented propane heater and a ceiling fan for comfort -lol. Good stuff
Reply:We have had good luck with young kids here in Alabama with the shooting house.  Helps keep them interested without freezing them to death.   Enjoy the moment while they are young for it shall pass very quick. Like the idea about the fish house. Richey

Reply:Have you made any changes/mods/ improvements to this stove for this year? Is the "customer " going to be helping with the eyeballing for deer this time around?
Reply:I meant to improve the door hinge and add an air shutter of some kind....but it was summer so that didn't happen  lolHe's definitely up for this year too - he's talked about it a few times already Dave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.
Reply:I think it is a pretty bad azz stove Dave on the astetic side.I think too many people go from the air conditioner to the furnace with no middle ground. Heat is good and cold is good. I often enjoy working in the shop with the temperature in the teens F. Just a pair of jeans, button front shirt and a watch cap....running the drill press for hours. That is good stuff there.Long sleeve button front shirt........
