In getting all my stuff lined up to begin learning tig with my newly acquired Maxstar I've been planning to set up a dedicated grinding wheel on one of my bench grinders when I remembered this 1" belt sander someone gave me years ago and I have never found a use for. Wouldn't this be a good tool for dedicated tungsten sharpening if I fit it up with a new abrasive belt?Miller Challenger 172Miller Thunderbolt AC/DC 225/150Miller Maxstar 150 STLVictor 100CVictor JourneymanOxweld OAHarris O/ASmith O/A little torchNo, that's not my car.
Reply:Not sure how well the sanding belt would hold up but I'd give it a shot!If you chuck the tungsten in a cordless drill it makes life a lot easier when you grind it!Real welders know how to penetrate!(Equipment)Whatever can be used to beat my opponent into submission!

Reply:Belt sanders are what I use in the shop. I find them to work well for pointing tungstens. Only reason I use a cheap Harbor Fright 3 inch grinder for field work is because it fits nicely in my tool box.Weld like a "WELDOR", not a wel-"DERR" MillerDynasty700DX,Dynasty350DX4ea,Dynasty200DX,Li ncolnSW200-2ea.,MillerMatic350P,MillerMatic200w/spoolgun,MKCobraMig260,Lincoln SP-170T,PlasmaCam/Hypertherm1250,HFProTig2ea,MigMax1ea.
Reply:I seriously doubt at this point you will be doing any sort of tig where contamination from grinding will be a major issue. Any contamination issues will most likely be due to NOT grinding when you foul the tungsten.I've never used my little 1" Delta like you have to grind, but I use my bigger 4" Delta belt sander all the time at home. The drill does make things a lot easier, especially when the tungsten gets short..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:i started using the belt sander along with the cordless drill in the carpenter's shop at work for grinding tungsten. i prefer that to gouging grooves in the pedestal grinder's wheel. i do a batch of about 10 so they last me a while.i.u.o.e. # 15queens, ny and sunny fla
Reply:Woodworking.... Seriously mines been sitting for years as well not being used. I recently dug it out and tried using it to shape some items I'd forged. College has a really nice 2" wide Burr King belt grinder I was using to sharpen slot punches and chisels and I thought I'd give my 1" a try, since right now it doesn't have the platen installed behind it, and "soft" radius's on the edges of slot punches seem to come out better on the belts that way vs on a belt with a platen. It worked pretty good until the belt came apart. Spare 1" belts I don't have on hand. I'll probably go buy some next time I have something to play with..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Well it worked great, especially with the cordless drill. Went to find belts and got a couple at Ace then stopped by Harbor Freight to see what they had. Got some 120 grit HF dirt cheap, like 59 cents each. They also have Zirconium. Put one of the cheap HF 120 grits on and so far so good, gave it a workout already. My first bead ever came out great without dipping once, but that didn't last long. Looks like I'd better pick up a few more tungstens.Miller Challenger 172Miller Thunderbolt AC/DC 225/150Miller Maxstar 150 STLVictor 100CVictor JourneymanOxweld OAHarris O/ASmith O/A little torchNo, that's not my car. |
