Picked 1 up, mostly intact, no lead studs and missing altenator/Generator. Code is 6340A and serial is A606022. turned over with 12 volt but needs TLC. ?? do I need altenator or generator. don't see a voltage reg. and according to lincoln site I think it is a 1968 that had a generator. anybody confirm?? positive or negative ground? Engine numbers are Lincoln model F163 # 62455 eng. code 4230. Reply:http://billswelderrepair.com/WELDER_AGE.htmlCongrats on a fine machine and yep its a 68.It should be a Neg ground. I would go with a 1 wire Delco altenator, it's hard to find the generators dirt cheap anymore. Kaye at Bills can get you anything you want for it. Im rebuilding my 62 redface and getting rid of the generator. I like being able to get parts at the local parts store if I can.http://www.decalshoppe.com/lincoln_electric_productsthis is where I got my replacement faceplatehttp://stumpfweldingsupplies.com/these guys have just about everythingI have a 74 that I have been using for 15 yrs. I cracked the head because of a small leak in the lower radiator hose. I had the murphy gauge installed but they dont read steam... It took me a while to find a new head and I did not want this to happen again! I went to the parts store and bought a thread low water level sensor and had a radiator shop clean and soulder in a bung in my radiator. I use an electronic ignition so it is wired to the ignition box for shutdown, I'm sure you could wire it to the mag ground stud also may take a different type of switch though. Post some pics
Reply:Check where you have wires conected to ign. switch. It had to read hot before it went to steam. I am thinking it was reading just not conected, or bad gauge.1990 SA 200Miller 225 Rip Miller302Miller 135Lincoln 200 MigHypertherm 600 PlasmaPlasma Cam Cutting TableMikita Cold SawJL Welding Tx . com
Reply:Further info, 3 out of 4 cylinders reading no compression, not paniced yet but will need further investigation. don't want to pull the head if I don't have too but might get the valve covers off for a better view of the inners. machine cranks but wont start. It will pop a little. Hope I don't have a broken crank or something major. Lincoln manual says add 1 oz oil through each spark plug hole and work it in to free rings after sitting dry. will see. no hissing from head gasket and no evidence of leaks, radiator is holding fluid. no water in oil. No abnormal crankase sounds when cranking. I thought I could feel the pistons rise and fall with a rubber hose through the spark plug holes but the flat heads must be different setup. did feel at least 1 valve in each cylinder moving."Si Vis Pacem Para Bellum"Lincoln Idealarc 250 AC/DCMillermatic 251 Syncrowave 300 30A spoolgunLincoln MP210Hypertherm 45(2) LN 25(2) Lincoln Weldanpower 225 CV(4) SA200 1 short hood SA250 SAM 400

Reply:I soaked her with ATF for the better part of the day but got impatient and opened the valve cover and found 2 and 3 exhaust stuck. a little working in with liquid wrench and all good to go, looks clean inside as well. Changed the oil and after a little trouble it fired off and away it went. I had to hold the throttle off Idle to get her to go but it ran really well and quite smooth for having sat. I had already cleaned and set the carb static. let her run the better part of 20 minutes to make sure it didn't get hot or any smoke or noises. Shut it down to put on welding leads but now would not fire back up, has no spark. I'm a little puzzled but will pull the mag apart and check to points later. Plugs are new but wires a suspect however it did run the first time with no sputter of popping. Could the points have burned. Also at this point I do not have the altenator hooked in but am using it as and Idler for the belt. I here the term 1 wire thrown around. Do I only have to hook the 1 wire from my GM altenator too the battery or will I have to hook something else up??"Si Vis Pacem Para Bellum"Lincoln Idealarc 250 AC/DCMillermatic 251 Syncrowave 300 30A spoolgunLincoln MP210Hypertherm 45(2) LN 25(2) Lincoln Weldanpower 225 CV(4) SA200 1 short hood SA250 SAM 400
Reply:hello the points most and likely quit firing , they are bad about that when they have been sitting up . the old trick on tractors is to put a penny in bettween points and rub it back and forth. but i just got a sa-200 my self had same problem ,but the penny wouldnt fit in the points so i took a piece of thick eletric wire beat it flat and used that. it quit on me a couple times been running fine every since. hope this helps.
Reply:Make sure you are running metallic or copper core spark plug wires with a magneto not carbon core resistor type they will break down with a mag causing misfiring and can ruin the points and coil in a mag. Best to run non resistor spark plugs too with a mag. If a battery distributor run whatever you want with it. Points should be set at .015 on the FM & Wico mags or .018" on Bosch mag. Drawing a dollar bill through the points will help clean them. Make sure the terminal on the mag is okay insulated and no shorts to ignition switch and switch is good. Wiring the alternator kind of depends on if you want to run some other accessories or just want to charge the battery. Mad Electrical site tech section has some diagrams on wiring and can help you decide if to go one wire or 3 wire setup. I like the 3 wire setup myself then you can add a voltmeter. http://www.madelectrical.com/More alternator info:http://www.alternatorparts.com/SA200 wiring schematics:http://www.billswelderrepair.com/schematics.html |
